Job summary

Shawnee Public Schools seeks a Special Ed Teaching Assistant/Paraprofessional for the Functional Skills classroom at Will Rogers Elementary. The role supports teachers to develop students’ self-care, communication and academic skills, enabling progression to mainstream settings.

Under supervision, you may assist with instructional activities, adapt learning materials, and aid in behavior management while maintaining confidentiality and professional standards.

Qualifications

• Associate degree or 48 college hours or pass the Oklahoma General Education Test.
• Must have or willing to complete the Special Education Paraprofessional course.
• Previous work or volunteer experience with elementary age students preferred.
• Assignment may require sign language competency and auxiliary aid experience.

Responsibilities

• Assists with instruction and supervises students in instructional settings and during non-instructional activities.
• Prepares and adapts instructional materials to reinforce skill learning as directed by the teacher.
• Serves as a resource for substitute teachers and maintains confidentiality of student information.
• Assists with student behavior management and can restrain students when necessary.
• Keeps grades and attendance records and prepares required paperwork.
• Performs classroom housekeeping and assists with student hygiene and mobility as needed.
