Phoenix Children's Hospital, Inc. is seeking a Sterile Processing & Distribution (SPD) Certified Technician for the main campus in Phoenix. This part-time position supports decontamination, sterilization and instrument tracking to meet Perioperative standards.

You will handle case carts, maintain instrumentation and liaise with OR teams to ensure timely availability for surgeries while upholding AAMI and CBSPD/IAHCSMM certifications as required.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Completion of an accredited CS/SPD Technician course required.
• National CSPD/CRCST certification preferred/noted.

Position Summary

The Sterile Processing & Distribution (SPD) Certified Technician provides a variety of technical functions in the decontamination and sterilization of surgical instruments and other medical supplies in compliance with policies and procedures of Perioperative Services, AORN, JCAHO, OSHA, and AAMI standards. The SPD Certified Technician must have a working knowledge of decontamination, instrumentation, and sterilization, as well as a national certification as noted in the job qualifications.

Position Duties

• Assures decontamination of instrumentation is in accordance with manufactures recommendations and AAMI (Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation) standards.
  1. Receives soiled case carts/bins and soiled instruments into the decontamination area.
  2. Prioritizes instruments needed for turnaround.
  3. Hand washes/pre-soaks instruments in an enzymatic solution.
  4. Changes chemicals for washers when indicated assuring the proper chemicals are used.
  5. Maintains records for sterilization.
• Act as a liaison between the Operating Room and Sterile Processing to communicate the changes and needs for subsequent cases.
  1. Checks operating room needs regularly.
  2. Checks case carts/bins for needed items.
  3. Returns unused items to the Sterile Processing Department.
  4. Assists in assembling case carts.
  5. Assists in maintaining supplies in O.R.'s and clean core (Main O.R. duty)
• Maintains effective communication to ensure appropriate instrumentation is available for surgery.
  1. Assemble instruments in order of importance.
  2. Inspects all instruments for damage.
  3. Assembles and tests instrumentation to ensure working properly.
  4. Determines when repair/replacement is needed.
  5. Wrap instruments/sets in appropriate manner.
  6. Utilize count sheets for proper sorting of instrumentation and equipment to provide for efficient procedures.
  7. Utilize 'Assembly Books' for proper peel packing of instrumentation for clinics/departments.
• Sterilizes instruments and equipment according to manufactures IFU's and AAMI standards.
  1. Perform all daily tests and record results.
  2. Prepare label gun with correct date and identification number and stamp each item to be sterilized.
  3. Utilize Instrument tracking system for proper documentation.
  4. Place sterilized items onto the appropriate storage shelf.
• Assemble case carts accurately and indicate missing items in the pick list.
  
• Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
