Job summary

Harborview Medical Center’s Interpreter Services Department is seeking a Medical Interpreter, Spanish, to enable patients to access medical care and to improve language access within a diverse clinical team.

The role requires interpreting across oral, sight and written modalities, and facilitating direct communication between patients and providers while managing cross-cultural challenges. Certification or qualification from WA DSHS, NBCMI, or CCHI is required.

Qualifications

• High school graduation or equivalent; two years interpretation experience in a clinic or hospital setting.
• AND medical interpreter certification or qualification either from Washington State Department of Social and Health Services, the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters, or the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters.

Responsibilities

• Provide oral, sight and written interpretation for target language(s)
• Transmit information accurately between patient and provider or staff
• Encourage direct communication between patient and provider or staff
• Manage complexity of cross-cultural encounter
• Provide sight translation in the presence of a provider and/or other medical staff
• Assist patients to complete medical, financial, or other forms
