Job summary

MedStar Health seeks an experienced Medical Interpreter to provide accurate language interpreting between patients and clinicians in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The role includes cultural mediation, administrative duties, and participation in after-hours on-call rotations.

Required are a high school diploma, 40-hour medical interpreting training, and fluency in English and the target language with medical terminology familiarity. CHI/CMI/IMIA certifications are preferred.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 40-hour medical interpreting training and language proficiency required.
• Fluency in English and target language with medical terminology familiarity.
• Healthcare interpreter certifications preferred (CHI/CMI/IMIA).
• 1–2 years medical interpreting experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provides oral language interpreting between patients and medical staff.
• Acts as cultural mediator as needed.
• Performs administrative tasks including triaging and scheduling interpreters.
• Identifies service needs for LEP patients and facilitates delivery.
• Rotates after-hours on-call program.
• Maintains confidentiality of interpreted conversations and documents.
• Maintains professionalism, neutrality, and accuracy in interpretation.
• Provides training and in-services on standard practices and cultural insights.
