Job summary

Umbra seeks a Flight Software Engineer with Rust/C++ experience to design, implement, and test embedded flight software for space missions. You will specify requirements, craft architecture, write code, and lead integration and unit tests while mentoring peers.

You will also document interfaces and ensure hardware-software integration, with on-site work in Santa Barbara/Goleta, CA, Arlington, VA, or Reston, VA. Experience in embedded systems is essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
• 3+ years of experience in high-reliability software development with Rust or C/C++.
• 1+ years developing concurrent code with asynchronous Rust.
• 3+ years of embedded software development with Rust or C/C++.
• Experience programming on embedded ARM cores in Linux, RTOS, or bare-metal environments.
• Strong understanding of processor architecture and optimization for performance/memory.
• Experience leading software development processes (Git, CI/CD, bug tracking, design documentation).

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to design, develop, and maintain reliable flight and payload software.
• Implement software to meet requirements and manage interfaces with subsystems and ground hardware.
• Develop command and control software for spacecraft flight operations and payloads.
• Participate in test campaigns from unit to automated system testing.
• Create and maintain documentation for software operation and interfaces.
• Oversee integration of flight software with flight hardware and conduct unit testing.
