Job summary

Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) invites applications for a Mechanical Engineering Assistant in the Civil & Commercial Space Division. The role runs through graduation, with 20 hours per week during the school year and up to 40 hours in the summer.

The student employee will work on space flight hardware prototypes, testing, and documentation, collaborating with engineers and QA while maintaining detailed records and drawings. SDL supports DoD and NASA missions.

Qualifications

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. person.
  • Must be enrolled at Utah State University pursuing a mechanical engineering or closely related degree.
  • Must have at least two years of school remaining (may include graduate school).
  • Must be available to work 20 hours per week during the school year and up to 40 hours per week during summer.
  • Graveyard shifts and weekend work may be required for certain testing.
  • Basic understanding of heat transfer by conduction and radiation.
  • CAD course completed with a B grade or higher.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision after training.
  • Ability to collaborate with students and professionals in a team.
  • Strong communication and accountability for outcomes.
  • Ability to maintain a work schedule and stay motivated.
  • Hands-on experience with basic hand tools and measuring equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with design, analysis, fabrication, and assembly of space flight hardware prototypes and ground support equipment.
  • Assist with testing of related hardware.
  • Assist with creating drawings and travelers, parts tracking, and kitting with QA and Program Team.
  • Report and present work results.
  • Create test procedures and reports.
