Job summary

Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) seeks a Mechanical Engineering Assistant to join the Civil & Commercial Space Division. The role supports design, analysis, fabrication, and testing of space flight hardware prototypes and related activities during the student program.

As a student employee, you’ll work 20 hours weekly during the school year and up to 40 hours in summer, with possible graveyard shifts for certain tests, while gaining hands-on experience in a national security and space research

Qualifications

  • Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or other U.S. person.
  • Enrolled at Utah State University pursuing mechanical engineering or related degree.
  • At least two years remaining in study (including graduate school).
  • Can work 20 h/week during school year and up to 40 h/week in summer.
  • Available for graveyard shifts and weekends when testing requires.
  • Completed an engineering CAD course with B grade or higher.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work in a team with students and professionals.
  • Clear and professional communication.
  • Ownership of tasks and accountability to schedule.
  • Self-motivated, dependable, detail oriented.
  • Hands-on experience with basic hand tools and measuring equipment.

Responsibilities

Join the Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) team, where you'll contribute to groundbreaking innovations! We are seeking applicants for a Mechanical Engineering Assistantto join our Civil & Commercial Space Division. The duration of employment is expected to begin as soon as possible and continue until graduation.

The Civil & Commercial Space Division is at the forefront of scientific research and space exploration. We equip major Government and commercial missions with calibrated state-of-the-art sensors and satellites. We also provide world-class AI&T technologies and mission management. Our projects include challenges across planetary science, Earth observation, heliophysics, and astrophysics. Be part of a team that pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in space and contributes to monumental scientific discoveries.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assists with the design, analysis, fabrication, and assembly of space flight hardware prototypes, engineering units, flight units, and ground support equipment (GSE)
  • Assists with the testing of related hardware
  • Assists with creating drawings and travelers, parts tracking, and kitting in coordination with Quality Assurance and Program Team
  • Reports and presents work results
  • Creates test procedures and reports
Required Qualifications
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., or other U.S. person
  • Must be enrolled at Utah State University pursuing a mechanical engineering or closely related degree
  • Must have at least two years of school remaining (may include graduate school)
  • Must be available to work 20 hours per week during the school year and up to 40 hours per week during summer, depending on program workload
  • Must be able to work graveyard shifts and weekends when certain testing requires it
  • Basic understanding of heat transfer by conduction and radiation
  • Must have successfully completed an engineering CAD course with a B grade or higher
  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision once trained
  • Ability to work closely in a team with students and professionals
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with colleagues
  • Ability to take ownership for tasks and take responsibility for outcomes
  • Ability to make and maintain accountability to a work schedule
  • Self-motivated, dependable, detail oriented
  • Hands‑on experience with basic hand tools and measuring equipment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Any machine shop or fabrication experience
  • Experience and interest in drafting metallic parts and assemblies for fabrication
