Job summary

Astrion in El Segundo, CA is seeking a SYSTEMS SAFETY ENGINEER to join our Space Access team. The role focuses on technical analysis of launch vehicle safety requirements, hazards, and compliance for Space Force/NSSL programs.

Mid-level position requiring DoD Secret clearance, extensive experience in safety disciplines, and collaboration across government and contractor teams to ensure safe launch operations and documentation.

Qualifications

• 7 years’ experience in relevant fields with at least 3 years in NSSL/Launch/Range/DoD/NASA or equivalent systems safety experience
• Bachelor’s degree in STEM field
• Active DoD Secret clearance
• Understanding of launch vehicle processes and day-of-launch procedures
• Familiarity with Space Force programs and Launch Vehicle System Safety design
• Knowledge of space safety including orbital debris mitigation
• Experience in an integrated contracting environment/team
• Working knowledge of MIL-STD-882 Department of Defense Standard Practice of system safety
• Participate in System Safety Working Groups and annual System Safety Groups
• Understanding of National Space Systems Launch vehicle interfaces

Responsibilities

• Conduct launch systems safety engineering and report recommendations to Space Force; update SSMP and PESHE per DoD guidance
• Evaluate LSP documentation for technical compliance with system safety requirements and document discrepancies
• Analyze design/testing of launch vehicle flight termination systems for risk mitigation recommendations
• Assess LSP hazard analyses to verify hazards are identified and mitigated
• Evaluate mission-unique requirements and provide technical assessment of discrepancies and cost impacts
• Assess and report on open launch safety items and provide disposition recommendations
• Verify and validate launch, payload, and mission safety requirements
• Develop technical progress schedules and support flight worthiness reviews
• Support Launch Service Provider design reviews, site rehearsals, and day-of-launch activities
