Job summary

Valero Energy invites aspiring interns to join its SOX Compliance Internship for Summer 2027 at the San Antonio headquarters. You will gain practical audit experience applying accounting, IS, and controls concepts in a fast-paced environment.

You'll assist with internal controls over financial reporting, identify key risks, execute test steps, and analyze data using Excel, SAP, HANA, SQL and PowerShell. This paid internship focuses on teamwork, mentorship, and professional growth.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Information Systems or related field.
• Graduation dates around 2027–2029.
• Able to work on-site at Valero San Antonio Headquarters.
• Commit to 40 hours per week during the Summer.
• GPA 3.0+ preferred.
• Microsoft Office and database experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist with scoping and maintenance of internal controls over financial reporting framework.
• Identify key risks and related controls within business and IT processes, and design control test steps.
• Participate in client interviews to validate the implementation of SOX controls.
• Execute test steps to assess operational effectiveness of key controls and document results.
• Examine activities to determine compliance with policies and regulations; compile analyses.
• Collect and interpret data using Excel, SAP, HANA, SQL, PowerShell; provide root cause analysis.
• Assist in testing results reporting and remediation follow-up.
• Demonstrate teamwork and responsibility with engagement team members.

The internship will provide practical audit experience and will allow the intern to apply accounting, information systems, and audit concepts and principles to develop the core competencies needed to succeed in a business environment.

Major Accountabilities:

• Assists with scoping and maintenance of internal controls over financial reporting framework.
• Assists with identification of key risks and the related controls within business and IT processes, and design control test steps to address key risks.
• Participates in client interviews to validate the implementation of SOX controls.
• Executes test steps to assess operational effectiveness of key controls, providing clear and concise testing documentation for review.
• Examines activities of various areas of the Company to determine the extent of compliance with policies and procedures, and rules of regulatory agencies.
• Collects, interprets, and compiles data to complete comprehensive analysis through the use of various applications (e.g., Excel, SAP , HANA, SQL, PowerShell, etc.) and provides root cause analysis for issues identified during testing.
• Assists in the preparation of testing results reporting and follow up to ensure implementation of remediation plans.
• Demonstrates teamwork and responsibility with engagement team members

This position is hourly nonexempt status, which means you are eligible for overtime pay.

Qualifications

• Able and willing to work on-site, in‑person at the Valero San Antonio Headquarters required.
• Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree (or higher) in Accounting, Finance, Information Systems or related field.
• Graduation dates of December 2027 through May 2029 required.
• Able to work 40 hours per week during the Summer required.
• Overall GPA of 3.0 (or higher) on a 4.0 scale preferred.
• Microsoft Office applications and database application experience preferred.
• Strong analytical, communication, and human relations skills preferred.
