Valero invites applications for a Metallurgy Intern to assist in refinery metallurgy, material selection, fabrication and welding, and corrosion engineering to support reliable performance aligned with safety and environmental objectives.

The internship offers hands-on projects, mentorship and professional development through the Valero Intern Program, with on-site work at Corpus Christi, TX; Texas City, TX; Port Arthur, TX; or San Antonio, TX.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science degree or higher in Metallurgical Engineering (preferred) from an accredited university, required.
  • GPA 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale, preferred.
  • Graduation dates Aug 2027 through May 2029, required.
  • Ability to work 40 hours per week, required.
  • Able and willing to work on-site and in-person, required.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with metallurgical, materials, fabrication & welding, and corrosion engineering support for refinery operating units.
  • Assists with area of operations support including metallurgy, process corrosion monitoring and control, and vendor coordination.
  • Assists with capital projects in materials selection and equipment degradation control methodologies.
  • Assists with turnaround organizations in piping/equipment degradation identification and risk-based methodologies.
  • Assists with best practices for refinery materials and corrosion control documents.
  • Assists with selection of welding processes and procedures for new fabrication and repairs.

The Metallurgy Intern will assist with technical aspects for metallurgy, material selection, fabrication & welding, and corrosion engineering to enable the most reliable performance that will meet the company's economic, environmental and safety objectives.

Major Accountabilities:
  • Assists with metallurgical, materials, fabrication & welding, and corrosion engineering support for refinery operating units.
  • Assists with area of operations support include metallurgy, process corrosion monitoring, process corrosion control and mitigation, opportunity crude evaluation, primary contact for refinery corrosion control vendors, project and maintenance materials selection, etc.
  • Assists with capital projects in areas of materials selection and equipment degradation control methodologies (e.g., corrosion probes, wash water, sample points, equipment degradation documents).
  • Assists with turnaround organizations in piping/equipment degradation identification and use of risk-based methodology.
  • Assists with best practices for common problem areas, maintenance of refinery materials and corrosion control documents
  • Assists with selection of welding processes and procedures for new fabrication and existing equipment repairs and modifications

Positions may be available at any of the following locations: Corpus Christi, TX - Bill Greehey Refinery Texas City, TX - Texas City Refinery Port Arthur, TX - Port Arthur Refinery San Antonio, TX - Valero Headquarters

This position is hourly nonexempt status, which means you are eligible for overtime pay.

Qualifications:
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science degree or higher degree in Metallurgical Engineering (preferred), Materials Engineering (preferred), or Materials Science (will consider, dependent on coursework taken) from an accredited university, required.
  • Overall GPA of 3.2 (or higher) on a 4.0 scale, preferred.
  • Graduation dates of August 2027 through May 2029, required.
  • Ability to work 40 hours per week, required.
  • Able and willing to work on-site and in-person, required.
