Job summary

Valero Energy is seeking an Audit Intern for Summer 2027 at our San Antonio headquarters. You will gain practical audit experience, applying accounting concepts to develop core competencies for a business environment.

The role involves assurance work, risk assessments, and data analysis using Excel, Power BI, SQL, Python, and Alteryx, with a focus on identifying process improvements and ensuring compliance. This is an hourly, nonexempt internship requiring full-time summer availability.

Qualifications

• Able to work on-site at Valero San Antonio Headquarters.
• Pursuing a bachelor's degree (or higher) in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• Graduation dates December 2027 through May 2029 required.
• Able to work 40 hours per week during the Summer.

Responsibilities

• Support assurance and advisory projects across the organization, helping identify process improvements.
• Participate in audit planning activities, including background information gathering, risk assessments and documentation.
• Assist in identifying key business risks and controls, and develop audit testing procedures.
• Analyze data using Excel, Power BI, SQL, Python and Alteryx to support audit objectives.
• Execute audit testing procedures and prepare clear testing documentation for review.
• Review contracts, invoices and reports to identify unusual transactions or control concerns.
• Evaluate compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements through audit testing and analysis.
• Assist in preparing written audit reports and follow-up on recommendations.
• Collaborate with audit team members and stakeholders with professionalism and a willingness to learn.

The internship will provide practical audit experience and will allow intern to apply accounting and audit concepts and principles to develop the core competencies needed to succeed in a business environment.

Major Accountabilities:

• Support assurance and advisory projects across various areas of the organization, helping identify opportunities for process improvement and operational efficiency.
• Participate in audit planning activities, including gathering background information, conducting preliminary interviews, and assisting with risk assessments and audit planning documentation.
• Assist in identifying key business risks and related controls within operational processes and support the development of audit testing procedures.
• Collect, clean, analyze, and interpret data using tools such as Excel, Power BI, SQL, Python, Alteryx, and other analytics platforms to support audit objectives.
• Execute audit test procedures to assess the effectiveness of key controls and prepare clear, concise, and well-organized testing documentation for review.
• Assist in reviewing contracts, invoices, reports, and other documentation to help identify unusual transactions, control concerns, or potential fraud indicators.
• Evaluate compliance with company policies, procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements through audit testing and analysis.
• Assists in the preparation of written reports of audit results and the follow up of audit recommendations made to ensure implementation.
• Collaborate effectively with audit team members and stakeholders, demonstrating professionalism, accountability, and a willingness to learn.

This position is hourly nonexempt status, which means you are eligible for overtime pay.

Qualifications

• Able and willing to work on-site, in-person at the Valero San Antonio Headquarters required.
• Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree (or higher) in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
• Graduation dates of December 2027 through May 2029 required.
• Able to work 40 hours per week during the Summer required.
• Overall GPA of 3.0 (or higher) on a 4.0 scale preferred.
• Microsoft Office applications and database application experience preferred.
• Strong analytical, communication, and human relations skills preferred.
