Job summary

The Salvation Army USA Central Territory seeks a Swim Instructor for a South Bend area facility. Under the supervision of the Aquatics Manager, you will monitor activities, assist with lessons, enforce safety rules, and help maintain records for swim programs.

Requirements include English communication, a valid driver’s license, CPR/First Aid, Safe From Harm training within 30 days, and WSI certification within 12 months.

Qualifications

• Must be able to communicate effectively in English.
• Physically capable of lifting up to 50 pounds and remaining on feet for extended periods.
• Having a valid driver’s license is required.
• CPR/First Aid training must be completed within 30 days of employment.
• American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification is required, or obtained within the first year of employment.

Responsibilities

• Ensure safety of participants and adapt lessons to fit needs and class descriptions.
• Set up, break down, and maintain all lesson equipment.
• Instruct swimming lessons for all ages by following a structured plan.
• Maintain attendance records and organize lesson plans and records.
• Ensure customer satisfaction with swim lessons and aquatic programs.
• Possibly work with other aquatic programs as needed.
• Assist management with other assigned tasks.

  • We're pleased to offer a $1,200 sign-on bonus for newly hired Swim Instructors, paid in three installments at 3, 6, and 12 months of continuous employment. To qualify, candidates must be hired on or after December 1, 2025, obtain American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification within 90 days of hire, maintain an average of at least 5 hours per week, and remain in good standing with satisfactory attendance and policy compliance. Rehires who have worked as a Swim Instructor/WSI at the South Bend Kroc Center within the past 12 months are not eligible.

Job Objective:

Under the supervision of the Aquatics Manager, and Aquatic Leads when applicable, Swim Instructors will monitor activities, observe and provide assistance to swimmers, prevent accidents, protect life and enforce regulations as well as control access to the pool/deck. You must be rescue ready for any emergency situation; providing care up to the standard of your certification. Assist with implementation of and teach swimming lessons and other aquatics programs. Provide support for swim lessons, record keeping, lesson cards and lesson plans. This position is also required to assist with general facility maintenance and cleaning duties as assigned. All position requirements are necessary to ensure that the Mission of The Salvation Army is effectively carried out. Attendance at guard and quarterly instructor in-service trainings is required.

What You Will Do:

• Ensure the safety of each participant while making sure the lessons fit the participant's needs and class description.
• Perform setup, breakdown and maintenance of all lesson equipment
• Instruct swimming lessons of all ages and abilities by developing and following a structured lesson plan.
• Maintain attendance recordkeeping for swim lessons and maintain an organized filing system of records and lesson plans.
• Responsible to ensure customer satisfaction in regards to swim lessons and other aquatic programs
• May work with any aspect of aquatic programs.
• Other tasks as assigned by management.

Minimum Qualifications:

The requirements below represent the minimal education, experience, skills, and abilities required for this position.

Education: Minimum age of 16 years

Background Checks: The position requires a background check to be completed, and all background check results will be reviewed.

Certifications: Must have a valid driver's license and maintain The Salvation Army Driver's qualification standard; must complete Safe From Harm and CPR/First Aid training within the first 30 days of employment.

American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification required, or within the first year 90 days employment.

Skills/Abilities:

• Able to speak, write, and understand English in a manner sufficient for effective communication with leadership, field personnel, and clientele.
• Able to lift or move up to 50 pounds, perform rescues, and remain on your feet for extended periods

Physical Requirements Include:

• Good speaking, hearing, and vision ability and excellent manual dexterity
• Lifting, pulling, and pushing materials up to 25 pounds
• May require bending, squatting, and walking.
• May require standing for extended periods.

Work is performed in an Aquatic environment; requires some nights and weekend work.
