Job summary

Recology in Santa Rosa is seeking an entry-level Sorter to support recycling operations on the Monday–Friday 12PM–8:30PM shift. Under supervision, you will sort recyclable materials by type, separate contaminated items, and help maintain a safe workspace.

This role emphasizes attentiveness, reliability, and ability to follow procedures, with opportunities to learn about the waste zero philosophy and join a large employee-owned organization.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Basic computer programs understood.
  • Ability to promote the WASTE ZERO philosophy and follow safety rules.

Responsibilities

  • Sorts mixed recyclable materials by type and from waste materials in compliance with laws, regulations and policies.
  • Identifies and distinguishes recyclables from non-recyclables, including sorting through materials on a conveyor.
  • Empties and/or changes sorted materials containers as needed.
  • Maintains a safe work area.
  • Reports hazardous materials in the waste stream as trained and takes appropriate action.
  • Follows company policies and local regulations.

Job description

THE ROLE OF SORTER
SHIFT: MONDAY - FRIDAY 12PM - 8:30PM

Under close supervision, sorts a wide variety of reusable waste material for recycling in accordance with established standards and procedures, assuring that contaminated or non-recyclable materials are separated from recyclable materials. Great entry level position for a person with the required knowledge, but no required experience.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, AND ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
  • Sorts mixed recyclable materials by type and from waste materials in compliance with laws, regulations and policies.
  • Identifies and distinguishes recyclables (paper, glass, etc.) from non-recyclables (garbage, etc.). Includes sorting through materials on a conveyor to view and recognize type, and opening bags to inspect contents.
  • Empties and/or changes sorted materials containers as needed.
  • Maintains a safe work area.
  • Per company policies and training, looks out for, reports on, and takes appropriate action regarding any hazardous materials in the waste stream.
  • Abides by company policies and procedures and state and local regulations.
QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:

  • Principles and practices of job site safety, potential job hazards, and state and local regulations.
  • Common procedures and general Company operations, following established methods and standing instructions.
  • Basic computer programs.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.

  • Ability to promote the WASTE ZERO philosophy by making the best and highest use of all resources.
  • Work under pressure, handle stressful situations and maintain flexibility.
  • Ability to maintain high levels of activity or productivity; operating with effectiveness, and determination over extended periods of time.
  • Ability to understand safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Consistently build knowledge and expertise about current job.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with peers, supervisors and customers.
  • Ability to communicate on a two-way radio or similar device.
  • Ability to lift 25lbs.
