Job summary

Recology Sonoma Marin is seeking an entry-level Sorter in Santa Rosa. Work involves sorting recyclable materials, identifying recyclables, and maintaining a safe, efficient work environment. Training and close supervision are provided as part of the role.

Great for individuals with basic knowledge and a willingness to learn, with no required prior experience. Shift is Monday–Friday, 12 PM–8:30 PM, at the Recology Sonoma Marin location.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Ability to lift 25lbs.
  • Follow safety rules and procedures.
  • Willingness to learn and follow instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Sort recyclable materials by type and compliance with laws and policies.
  • Identify recyclables (paper, glass, etc.) from waste.
  • Empty and replace sorted materials containers as needed.
  • Maintain a safe work area.
  • Report hazardous materials and take appropriate action.

THE ROLE OF SORTER

SHIFT: MONDAY - FRIDAY 12PM - 8:30PM

Under close supervision, sorts a wide variety of reusable waste material for recycling in accordance with established standards and procedures, assuring that contaminated or non-recyclable materials are separated from recyclable materials. Great entry level position for a person with the required knowledge, but no required experience.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, AND ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
  • Sorts mixed recyclable materials by type and from waste materials in compliance with laws, regulations and policies.
  • Identifies and distinguishes recyclables (paper, glass, etc.) from non-recyclables (garbage, etc.). Includes sorting through materials on a conveyor to view and recognize type, and opening bags to inspect contents.
  • Empties and/or changes sorted materials containers as needed.
  • Maintains a safe work area.
  • Per company policies and training, looks out for, reports on, and takes appropriate action regarding any hazardous materials in the waste stream.
  • Abides by company policies and procedures and state and local regulations.
Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:

  • Principles and practices of job site safety, potential job hazards, and state and local regulations.
  • Common procedures and general Company operations, following established methods and standing instructions.
  • Basic computer programs.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
Skills and / or Ability to:

  • Ability to maintain high levels of activity or productivity; operating with effectiveness, and determination over extended periods of time.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with peers, supervisors and customers.
  • Ability to communicate on a two-way radio or similar device.
  • Ability to lift 25lbs.
