Job summary

North Alabama Medical Center seeks a Sonographer to join our Imaging team on a PRN basis. The role involves patient intake, explaining procedures, and performing diagnostic ultrasound exams using standard imaging modalities.

You will maintain equipment, document results, assist scheduling, support invasive procedures with sterile technique, and uphold infection control standards. Requires ARDMS eligibility or certification, an associate degree in ultrasound, state license, and BLS.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in ultrasound/sonography or equivalent.
  • ARDMS certification or eligible and pass in at least one area within one year.
  • State license to practice as a Sonographer.
  • BLS certification.

Responsibilities

  • Receives patients, explains procedure, and ensures patient comfort.
  • Provides patient services to all ages using imaging modalities.
  • Operates ultrasound equipment to perform diagnostic examinations and routine invasive procedures per established standards.
  • Maintains equipment and supplies, organizing work area.
  • Keeps accurate records, assists scheduling, and keeps patient flow smooth.
  • Verifies physician's requisition for completeness and refers questions to the ultrasound physician.
  • Assists the radiologist/referring physician in invasive procedures using sterile technique and infection control guidelines.
  • Recognizes significant structures on monitor, differentiates artifacts from anatomic or pathologic structures.
  • Applies in-depth knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and technical expertise to improve diagnostic results.

Education

Associate’s degree in Sonography or equivalent
ARDMS certification or eligible
State license to practice as a Sonographer
BLS certification

Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree required; graduate of an approved Ultrasound/Sonography program or equivalent.
  • ARDMS Registered; or new graduate must be ARDMS eligible and pass a test in at least one area (e.g., Abdomen, OBGYN) including physics within one year of employment.
  • State license to practice as a Sonographer.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
