Job description

SHIFT: Thursday-Saturday 7 AM - 7:30 PM

The practice of ultrasonography is performed by an ultrasound technologist responsible for administering high-frequency sound waves and other diagnostic techniques to patients of all ages (from newborns to geriatrics) for medical purposes. A Sonographer/Technologist performs ultrasonography procedures and related techniques, producing images for interpretation by a licensed independent practitioner. Ultrasonography combines scientific knowledge, technical skills, patient interaction, and compassionate care to provide diagnostic information. A Sonographer/Technologist recognizes patient conditions essential for successful procedure completion.

Sonographer/Technologists must demonstrate an understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology. They recognize patient conditions critical for the success of procedures and exercise independent, professional, and ethical judgment. Sonographer/Technologists serve as the primary liaison between patients, licensed practitioners, and other support team members. They must remain sensitive to patients' physical and emotional needs through effective communication, assessment, monitoring, and care skills. Participation in quality improvement and continuous performance assessment is expected.

Critical thinking, independent judgment, and ethical conduct are essential in all work aspects. Engagement in continuing education to enhance patient care, public education, knowledge, and technical competence is also expected.

The scope of practice includes: Performing diagnostic ultrasound examinations upon order or for interpretation by a licensed practitioner; selecting ultrasonic frequencies and transducers; assisting with interventional procedures such as biopsies and drainages; maintaining records and respecting confidentiality; applying patient safety principles; relaying and documenting imaging orders; corroborating clinical history; verifying informed consent; preparing patients; minimizing exposure using ALARA principles; performing venipuncture and intravenous access; administering medications as prescribed; evaluating image quality; identifying and escalating emergencies; providing patient education; mentoring students; and participating in quality assurance activities.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
- Certification by ARRT (S), RDMS, RDCS, CCI, or RVT
- For new graduates: reach certification eligibility within 12 months and pass within 6 months of eligibility.

For continued employment:
- Current certification
- Progression to Imaging Technologist Advancement Program Level 2 within 24 months
- Basic Life Support (BLS)

Experience: N/A required; preferred: 1 year as a Sonographer/Technologist, experience in an academic medical center.

Education: Graduation from an accredited sonography or radiologic technology program; Bachelor's preferred.

Independent actions include performing ultrasound exams independently, adhering to safety standards, and representing VCU Health System's goals and values.

Additional requirements: Weekend shifts; considered an 'Essential Employee' per VCUHS policy.

Physical activities include lifting, standing, sitting, walking, repetitive motion, and prolonged computer interaction. Sensory and emotional skills include strong recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, reading, and adapting to a fast-paced environment.
