Job summary

UPMC Western Maryland is seeking a Casual Sonographer to join our team. The Sonographer will perform ultrasound imaging at a skilled level, with independent judgment, in accordance with applicable scope and standards of practice.

The position involves shifts on varied schedules, including weekends and holidays. Experience in vascular and obstetric ultrasound is highly encouraged. Training and career ladder opportunities are available within our system.

Qualifications

• Formal training in a CAAHEP-accredited Ultrasound program is required.
• Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) certification is required.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification is required.

Responsibilities

• Performs ultrasound examinations with appropriate instrumentation.
• Assists physicians with invasive procedures following universal protocol standards.
• Interacts with patients and colleagues with care, listening, dignity and respect.
• Communicates procedures clearly to patients to alleviate fears and ensure understanding.
• Ensures exams are coded, tracked, networked and charges entered.

Responsibilities

• Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.
• Assists physicians with invasive procedures, adhering to universal protocol standards.
• Interacts with patients and co-workers, displaying caring, listening, dignity, and respect.
• Communicates instructions clearly to patients, explaining procedures to alleviate fears.
• Ensures exams are properly coded, tracked, networked, and charges entered.
• Identifies patients using two identifiers and reviews patient history and physician orders.
• Documents patient history in electronic records as required.
• May handle High-Level Disinfection of devices, supplies, and equipment.
• Obtains and documents cross-sectional anatomy images, correlating measurements with data charts.
• Performs technical ultrasound procedures, using appropriate instrumentation and techniques.
• Completion of formal training in an Ultrasound program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) is required.
