Job summary

Montage Deer Valley is seeking a passionate Sommelier to elevate our wine program and guest experiences in a luxury setting. You will guide guests through our wine list, mentor staff, and ensure impeccable service during outlets, lounges, and banquets.

You will train associates on wine regions, varietals, and food pairings, while maintaining cellar conditions and inventory. A strong hospitality mindset and collaborative spirit are essential for success.

Qualifications

  • One year minimum of experience in food and beverage operations, a plus.
  • Certificate from the Guild of Sommeliers, a plus.
  • Luxury hotel experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in administering the sale of beverages in outlet, lounge, and banquet functions, and mentor bartenders and servers.
  • Guide guests through the wine list with detailed descriptions and recommendations.
  • Engage guests with wine-related discussions and stories about featured wines.
  • Educate associates about wine regions, varietals, flavors, and food pairings through training and tastings.
  • Conduct associate training on wine service standards including decanting, pouring, and presentation.
  • Provide ongoing mentorship to develop wine knowledge and service skills of team members.
  • Maintain the wine cellar with proper temperature, humidity, and storage conditions.
  • Conduct regular inventory audits, monitor aging, and rotate cellar to maximize profitability.
  • Work with restaurant management to oversee beverage costs and pricing.
  • Maintain wine and cocktail lists with bartenders and beverage managers.
  • Attend daily pre-shift meetings.
  • Deliver on guests’ expectations and create WOW moments.
  • Perform additional duties as needed.

Your Journey
  • Assist in administering the sale of beverages in outlet, lounge, and banquet functions, as well as teaching and mentoring bartenders, servers, and other associates involved in the sale of alcoholic beverages
  • Guide guests through the wine list, offering detailed descriptions and recommendations based on their preferences and menu selections.
  • Engage guests in discussions about wine, answering questions, sharing insights, and providing memorable anecdotes or stories about featured wines.
  • Educate associates about wine regions, grape varietals, flavor profiles, and food pairings through training sessions, tastings, and educational materials.
  • Conduct associate training on wine service standards, including proper decanting, pouring, and presentation techniques.
  • Provide ongoing mentorship and support to develop the wine knowledge and service skills of team members.
  • Maintain the wine cellar in optimal condition, ensuring proper temperature, humidity, and storage conditions to preserve wine quality.
  • Conduct regular inventory audits, monitor wine aging, and track cellar rotation to minimize waste and maximize profitability.
  • Work with restaurant management to oversee beverage costs and pricing
  • Maintain wine and cocktail lists with Bartenders and Beverage Managers
  • Attend daily pre-shift meeting
  • Deliver on guests’ expectations and have the desire to create WOW moments
  • Perform additional duties as assigned that may be outside of the normal scope of duties, based on business needs

  • You are passionate about spirits, wine, and food

Must Haves
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays
  • Ability to collaborate in a team environment
  • Basic communication skills
  • One year minimum of experience in food and beverage operations, a plus
  • Prior micros or other systems experience, a plus
  • Certificate of completion from the Guild of Sommeliers, a plus
  • Luxury hotel experience, a plus

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and exercise mobility for extended periods of time during your scheduled shift
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and for extended periods during the shift
