Job summary

Montage Hotels & Resorts is seeking a passionate Sommelier to lead wine service across our outlets, lounges, and banquets. You will guide guests through the wine list, sharing descriptive recommendations and engaging stories to enhance their experience.

You will train and mentor associates on wine regions, varietals, and pairings, while maintaining the wine cellar and collaborating on beverage costs. A luxury hotel background is preferred.

Qualifications

• Minimum 1 year of experience in food and beverage operations.
• Certificate from the Guild of Sommeliers is preferred.
• Luxury hotel experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Assist in selling beverages across outlets, lounges and banquets and mentor staff involved in beverage service.
• Guide guests through the wine list with detailed descriptions and recommendations.
• Engage guests with wine discussions and memorable stories about featured wines.
• Educate associates on wine regions, varietals, flavors, and food pairings through training.
• Conduct wine service training on decanting, pouring, and presentation.
• Provide ongoing mentorship to develop wine knowledge and service skills.
• Maintain and monitor wine cellar conditions and inventory to optimize quality and minimize waste.
• Collaborate with management to oversee beverage costs and pricing.
• Maintain wine and cocktail lists with team members and managers.

Your Journey

• Assist in administering the sale of beverages in outlet, lounge, and banquet functions, as well as teaching and mentoring bartenders, servers, and other associates involved in the sale of alcoholic beverages
• Guide guests through the wine list, offering detailed descriptions and recommendations based on their preferences and menu selections.
• Engage guests in discussions about wine, answering questions, sharing insights, and providing memorable anecdotes or stories about featured wines.
• Educate associates about wine regions, grape varietals, flavor profiles, and food pairings through training sessions, tastings, and educational materials.
• Conduct associate training on wine service standards, including proper decanting, pouring, and presentation techniques.
• Provide ongoing mentorship and support to develop the wine knowledge and service skills of team members.
• Maintain the wine cellar in optimal condition, ensuring proper temperature, humidity, and storage conditions to preserve wine quality.
• Conduct regular inventory audits, monitor wine aging, and track cellar rotation to minimize waste and maximize profitability.
• Work with restaurant management to oversee beverage costs and pricing
• Maintain wine and cocktail lists with Bartenders and Beverage Managers
• Attend daily pre-shift meeting
• Deliver on guests’ expectations and have the desire to create WOW moments
• Perform additional duties as assigned that may be outside of the normal scope of duties, based on business needs

About You

• You are passionate about spirits, wine, and food
• You are personable and love engaging with guests
• You are open to learning, developing, and growing both yourself, personally, and helping others do the same
• You are trustworthy and have integrity

Must Haves

• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays
• Ability to collaborate in a team environment
• Basic communication skills
• One year minimum of experience in food and beverage operations, a plus
• Prior micros or other systems experience, a plus
• Certificate of completion from the Guild of Sommeliers, a plus
• Luxury hotel experience, a plus

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand and exercise mobility for extended periods of time during your scheduled shift
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and for extended periods during the shift

The pay scale for Sommelier is $18.00

The pay scale is the base salary or hourly wage range, exclusive of incentive pay such as commissions, piece rates, gratuities, and the like, that Montage reasonably expects to pay for the position.
