Senior ACH Payments Transformation Solutions Architect / Consultant
Role Overview:
- We are seeking a Senior ACH Payments Transformation Solutions Architect/Consultant to support a major transformation within a financial institution's payments organization.
- This individual will serve as a senior SME across ACH payments, banking operations, solution architecture, and technology, helping assess the current state, define the future-state solution, and identify the operational and technical capabilities required for successful transformation.
- The ideal candidate has hands-on experience leading or supporting a significant ACH transformation within a bank or financial institution. This is not simply an ACH application or payments role—the individual must be able to identify requirements, dependencies, risks, architectural gaps, operational considerations, and potential issues that may not yet be visible to the existing team.
- A key focus will be ACH ODFI/RDFI capabilities and operating models, including the banking, operational, technology, architecture, integration, processing, and file-movement changes required to support greater ownership of these functions.
- Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of relevant experience across banking technology, ACH/payments, financial-services consulting, solution architecture, payments architecture, banking operations, or related disciplines.
- Deep ACH payments expertise beyond basic payment processing or application-level experience.
- Proven experience supporting a major ACH transformation, modernization, operating-model change, or comparable initiative within a bank or financial institution.
- Strong understanding of ODFI (Originating Depository Financial Institution) and RDFI (Receiving Depository Financial Institution) responsibilities and processes.
- Ability to explain the complete end-to-end ACH transaction lifecycle and what occurs behind the scenes during ACH processing.
- Strong understanding of ACH files, batches, transaction processing, file movement, and data flows between financial institutions, ACH/Federal Reserve infrastructure, internal systems, and downstream processing environments.
- Strong banking operations/back-office knowledge and ability to connect operational requirements with supporting technology and architecture.
- Strong solution architecture and systems-thinking skills, including current-state assessment, target-state architecture, gap analysis, dependency identification, and solution design.
- Experience creating or contributing to architecture diagrams, sequence diagrams, process flows, integration diagrams, and technical documentation.
- Strong enterprise integration knowledge, including file transmission, APIs, messaging, data movement, and application-to-application communication.
- Broad technical knowledge of enterprise environments, including familiarity with Java, AWS/cloud, integrations, enterprise applications, and file transmission. Hands-on development is not required.
- Ability to identify missing capabilities, architectural gaps, risks, dependencies, controls, and operational concerns proactively.
- Strong consultative problem-solving skills and ability to operate effectively through ambiguity.
- Ability to communicate credibly with banking operations stakeholders, architects, engineers, technology leaders, and business teams.
- Strong foundational ACH and banking knowledge with the ability to explain concepts clearly and specifically.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as a senior ACH Payments SME and transformation advisor across a banking/payments modernization initiative.
- Assess current ACH operating models, banking processes, systems, integrations, dependencies, and technology environments.
- Define and support future-state ACH architecture and operating models, particularly around origination and receiving capabilities.
- Apply prior ACH transformation experience to identify gaps, risks, dependencies, controls, missing capabilities, and implementation challenges.
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of the end-to-end ACH transaction lifecycle, including origination, network/Federal Reserve processing, receipt, internal processing, posting, and exceptions.
- Understand ODFI and RDFI responsibilities and how financial institutions participate throughout the ACH lifecycle.
- Analyze ACH files, batches, transactions, data flows, integrations, landing zones, and downstream processing across external and internal environments.
- Advise on multiple approaches for file transmission, system integration, and data movement and understand the implications of different solution options.
- Evaluate upstream/downstream dependencies and the impact of architectural or process changes across connected systems.
- Translate banking and ACH requirements into technical architecture and executable solution designs.
- Develop or contribute to context diagrams, sequence diagrams, system interaction diagrams, process flows, integration diagrams, and technical documentation.
- Partner with banking operations, product, architecture, engineering, and technology stakeholders to evaluate solutions and challenge assumptions.
- Clearly communicate complex ACH, banking, operational, and technical concepts to both business and technical audiences.
- Operate as a consultative SME, helping define requirements rather than simply executing predefined requirements.
- Work effectively in an environment where the future-state solution and requirements are still evolving.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience helping a financial institution establish, expand, internalize, or transform ODFI/RDFI capabilities.
- Experience supporting ACH transformation from current-state assessment through future-state architecture/design and implementation.
- Financial-services/payments consulting experience with a major consulting organization.
- Experience as a Payments Solutions Architect, Payments Architect, ACH Architect, Payments Transformation Consultant, Banking Technology Consultant, or similar hybrid business/technology role.
- Experience with ACH modernization, payment-rail transformation, payment-processing modernization, or banking-platform transformation.
- Experience across both ACH origination and receiving.
- Experience with Federal Reserve/ACH network interactions, batch/file processing, reconciliation, exception handling, and downstream banking applications.
- Experience with complex enterprise integration architectures involving file-based integrations, APIs, messaging, and data movement.
- Familiarity with Java, AWS/cloud environments, and modern integration patterns.
- Experience presenting architecture strategies, solution options, transformation roadmaps, and recommendations to senior leadership.
- Strong combination of banking operations expertise and technical architecture knowledge.
