Job summary

The City of Pittsburgh is seeking a Solid Waste Operator to drive a solid waste truck on designated city routes, perform daily inspections, and ensure safe, efficient collection of household, bulk, and recycling refuse. You will also maintain accurate records and support on-route tasks as needed.

Residents must be Pittsburgh residents and maintain residency. A valid Pennsylvania Commercial Class A or B CDL with the L air brake restriction lifted is required, with transfer of out-of-state

Qualifications

• Must be or become a resident of the City of Pittsburgh prior to employment and maintain residency.
• Must hold a valid Commercial Class A or B Pennsylvania CDL with the L restriction lifted.
• Out-of-state CDL holders must transfer to Pennsylvania within 90 days of start.
• Background checks and pre-hire screening required.

Responsibilities

• Drives a solid waste truck, collects refuse (household, bulk, or recycling) and empties containers on designated City routes.
• Carries, lifts, and loads solid waste (weighing up to 75 to 100 lbs.) into the truck daily.
• Drives to and from landfill and on route.
• Replaces refuse containers; ensures surrounding area is clean.
• Performs daily pre- and post-inspection of vehicle and reports malfunctions and maintenance needs.
• Checks and monitors oil, water, gas, tire condition, etc.
• Requests periodic maintenance on vehicle.
• Maintains accurate records for equipment and work routes.
• Cleans and maintains cab area of truck, ejection blade, and sweeper.
• Observes proper safety precautions in hydraulic and packing system operation.
• Receives complaints from residents and refers them to foreman/supervisor.
• Performs other related tasks as assigned.
