MORE ABOUT THE ROLE

The Mecklenburg County Solid Waste is seeking a customer focused person to staff our William Davie Recycling Center. This individual will guide customers in their recycling activities at this recycling center embedded in the William Davie Park. This position will work to keep the grounds of the center clean and tidy and track the amounts of materials that resident’s drop-off. The incumbent should have customer service experience and great customer service skills. The position will work a schedule of Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday; 9 am to 5 pm. This is a full-time position, and some work will be outdoors, as the recycling collection center is an outdoor collection center. Basic computer skills are desired.

Position Summary

Monitors incoming materials at solid waste centers for the safe acceptance and disposal of the incoming items at assigned solid waste centers or landfill. This position, under direct supervision, is responsible for performing manual labor and ensuring safety procedures are followed at solid waste centers or landfill to process waste related materials, including accepting and processing household hazardous wastes. Position will operate light equipment such as skid-steer loaders, backhoes and riding mowers. Position is direct facing for customer service.

Essential Functions
  • Direct traffic flow of vehicles entering solid waste acceptance centers to the proper area to unload
  • Assure that refuse remains in the area is not hauled away as salvage
  • Perform vehicle load inspections and monitors incoming loads for unacceptable materials
  • Keep work area clean and free of debris to prevent damage to incoming vehicles
  • Assist with evaluating solid waste at solid waste centers or landfill for acceptability or correct location
  • Assist with cleaning and maintenance of trucks and tools
  • May load and unload heavy material from trucks and vans using forklifts or manual methods when applicable
  • Move and aid in moving furniture or equipment and large and bulky objects
  • Perform general grounds keeping such as picking up trash and debris
  • Monitor the safety of at job site with consideration of customers and co-workers
  • May operate non-CDL required vehicles as needed
Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum of two years of experience.
Education
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Combination of relevant education and relevant experience accepted?: Yes
Licenses and Certifications
  • May require a valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver's License
  • May require county Driving Privileges
  • May require Powered Truck Certification (Forklift)
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Bilingual skills preferred
    • Skills working with powered machinery & tools
    • High aptitude of mechanical skills
    • Ability to obtain a CDL
    • Ability to obtain solid waste operations certificate for landfill or compost operations
    • Past customer service skills
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Knowledge of Light equipment used in maintenance, grounds keeping, solid waste and construction.
    • Occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to safe operation of equipment, tools and industrial/construction settings.
    • Basic tools used in maintenance and construction work

    Skills
    • Operating power tools such as, blowers, sweepers, mowers, saws and other devices.
    • Operating light motorized equipment, such as skid-steer loaders, riding mowers and industrial trucks (forklifts)
