Job summary

Buncombe County Solid Waste in Asheville, NC is seeking a Solid Waste Assistant Manager to provide managerial and operational leadership for countywide landfill operations and environmental compliance programs. The role reports to the Solid Waste Manager and oversees a team, with in-person work Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm, and possible overtime based on needs.

Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED and four years in landfill operations or related fields.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of principles of municipal solid waste collection and disposal.
• Ability to interpret codes, regulations, policies, and procedures.
• Experience supervising landfill operations and staff.
• Ability to operate heavy equipment used in landfill operations.
• Familiarity with safety programs and environmental compliance.

Responsibilities

• Assist in directing and scheduling Landfill operations and personnel.
• Operate heavy equipment and manage grade control for landfills.
• Recruitment, training, and supervision of landfill staff.
• Support safety program development and enforcement.
• Coordinate with Fleet Manager for maintenance and equipment needs.
