Job description

Job Title: Solid Waste Equipment Operator

Under the general supervision of the Solid Waste Supervisor, the Solid Waste Equipment Operator is responsible for operating a variety of motorized equipment involved in the collection and disposal of municipal solid waste.

Benefits: Current CDL holders are eligible for a $1,500 hire-on bonus.

1. Equipment Operation: Operate various solid waste collection vehicles including rear-end load trucks, semi-automated rural rear-end load trucks, open-top brush/rubbish trucks, and boom-type trucks on assigned routes, ensuring safety for others, city property, and private property by following safety procedures and watching for pedestrians, utility lines, and obstructions.
2. Route and Customer Service: Check daily work assignments, maintain route documentation, notify customers of collection issues via tagging, and report service concerns.
3. Vehicle Maintenance: Perform routine checks, preventative maintenance, and report malfunctions. Keep vehicles clean, wash, and lubricate as needed.
4. Inspections: Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, report repairs, and ensure mobile camera system functionality.
5. Customer Accounts: Sequence new customer accounts, report issues, and document for customer service verification in the routing system.
6. Safety and Incident Reporting: Report injuries, vehicle incidents, property damage, or container issues to the supervisor.
7. Training and Other Duties: Participate in safety, environmental, and hazardous waste training. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

• High school diploma or GED equivalent
• State of Texas Class “B” Commercial Drivers License (CDL)
• Availability for emergency response and catastrophic weather events
• Willingness to support after-hours work, including evenings, weekends, and holidays

Preferred Qualifications:

• Two years of experience driving a commercial vehicle
• Previous solid waste collection experience
• Excellent customer service skills
• Basic computer skills

Special Requirements:

Pre-employment drug screening is required due to the safety-sensitive nature of the position, in accordance with city policy.
