Job summary

The City of Watertown seeks a Solid Waste Driver - Collections to operate a refuse collection vehicle, collect residential waste, and load containers in alignment with safety procedures. Daily routes: 4-10’s; 5:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. w/ ½ lunch; Monday through Thursday.

The facility is open Monday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Starting salary is Grade 130 / Step 1 = $50,606.40 per year or $4,217.20 per month, DOE.

Responsibilities

• Drives and operates a refuse collection vehicle to collect residential refuse/recycling/yard waste with automated trucks.
• Completes assigned and scheduled route in a safe manner on time and without assistance.
• Drives designated vehicle to designated disposal site, unloads, and returns directly to route.
• Delivers polycarts and dumpsters to new residential and apartment complex customers; picks up polycarts no longer in use.
• Performs repairs and maintenance on containers/bins; assembles new containers and disassembles broken containers.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position performs manual labor and equipment operation to assist with the collection of residential solid waste and recycling materials for the City.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be required and assigned.

1. Drives and operates a refuse collection vehicle to collect residential refuse/recycling/yard waste with automated trucks.
2. Completes assigned and scheduled route in a safe manner on time and without assistance.
3. Drives designated vehicle to designated disposal site, unloads, and returns directly to route.
4. Delivers polycarts and dumpsters to new residential and apartment complex customers. Picks up polycarts no longer in use.
5. Checks for damaged or abandoned garbage containers while on route.
6. Performs repairs and maintenance on containers/bins. Assembles new containers. Disassembles broken containers.
7. Receives and offloads containers shipments and reloads shipments being returned.
8. Safely operates assigned equipment. Ensures proper traffic control and safety procedures and devices are available and used for traffic control as needed during collection activities.
9. Cleans, lubricates, and performs preventive maintenance or repair on equipment.
10. Reports maintenance and/or repair needs which require mechanic assistance.
11. Completes work orders, daily activity reports, inspection reports, and time sheets; maintains maintenance and service records/logs, and other pertinent information.
12. Responds to customer complaints and/or concerns. Advises supervisor(s) of complaints and/or concerns not resolved.
13. Cleans shop area, sweeps floors, replaces tools, maintains and repairs equipment and collects windblown refuse at the landfill and along roads.
14. Provides back up support and assistance to the department as needed.
15. Reports to work for after-hour needs, as assigned.
16. Consistent and punctual attendance for all scheduled shifts is required.
17. Other duties as assigned.
