Job summary

City of Temple, TX seeks a reliable Solid Waste Driver to operate a collection truck on a designated route under supervision. You will perform routine maintenance, use route management software, and ensure safety protocols are followed to efficiently collect and dispose of waste.

Responsibilities include driving, assisting on nearby routes, reporting field issues, and maintaining the vehicle and safety equipment. High school diploma or equivalent required; Class B CDL preferred.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Six months experience in waste collections or related field.

Responsibilities

• Operates a solid waste collection vehicle following an established route utilizing route management software.
• Enters and exits vehicle to push/pull containers and operate hydraulic collection mechanisms.
• Deposits solid waste items at designated location (landfill, Brazos River Authority, etc.).
• Operates tablet software for the assigned route.
• Assists neighboring routes when needed.
• Communicates with drivers, office staff and supervisor to report problems in the field.
• Completes daily vehicle maintenance checklist on routing software tablet and documents faults.
• Tops off fuel tanks daily and maintains interior/exterior of the vehicle.
• Performs minor maintenance on trucks (greasing, bulbs, mud flaps).
• Ensures all safety equipment is functional (lights, camera).
• Adheres to defensive driving rules and city safety policies.

Summary

Solid Waste Driver, under the general supervision of the Foreman, drives a collection truck on a designated route, manually collecting and disposing of waste. This role involves vehicle operation, routine maintenance, issue reporting, and strict adherence to safety and traffic regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Operates a solid waste collection vehicle following an established route utilizing route management software
• Enters and exits vehicle throughout route to push/pull containers, operate hydraulic mechanisms used in collection of debris and pick up small items as needed
• Deposits solid waste items at designated location (landfill, Brazos River Authority, etc.)
• Operates tablet software designed for assigned route
• Assists neighboring route(s) when needed
• Communicates with other drivers, office staff and supervisor to report problems in the field
• Completes daily vehicle maintenance checklist on routing software tablet and documents faulty/inoperable items
• Tops-off fuel tank(s) daily; washes, cleans and maintains interior/exterior of collection vehicle, to include packer bodies, collection mechanisms, storage areas, etc.
• Performs minor maintenance on trucks to include greasing of systems, light bulbs, mud flaps, etc.
• Ensures all safety equipment is operational (flashing caution lights, camera, etc.)
• Adheres to defensive driving rules, obeys traffic laws and follow city policies and safety guidelines
• Performs other duties /assumes responsibility for other routes and trucks as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
