Job summary

DEFINITION

To manually load refuse on solid waste trucks; to ensure refuse is properly picked up on the assigned commercial or residential route; and to perform minor maintenance and cleaning activities on solid waste heavy equipment. May be involved in the operation of the drop-off recycling center. Also, will perform building and custodial maintenance as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the full journey level class within the Solid Waste Collector series. Employees within this class perform the full range of duties as assigned including loading refuse onto solid waste trucks and performing minor maintenance and repair of dumpsters. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and polices of the work unit. This class is distinguished from the Senior Solid Waste Collector in that the latter has lead responsibilities for the route and is responsible for operating sanitation collection vehicles and/or equipment.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from the Solid Waste Collection Supervisor and upper management.

ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS--Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:

When assigned to any division:

  • Load refuse on solid waste trucks; adhere to standard safety precautions.
  • Maintain and repair solid waste dumpsters; replace faulty dumpsters as assigned.
  • Perform minor maintenance activities on sanitation heavy equipment; clean solid waste equipment.
  • Clean alleys; remove debris, brush and other refuse.
  • Maintain appropriate logs and records on collection and delivery activities.
  • Perform work activities according to safe work practices and procedures.
  • Must have acceptable attendance and the ability to get along well with people.
  • Any specific requirements that are assigned on the "offer of employment letter."
  • Perform work activities according to safe work practices and procedures.
  • Operation of and/or assist in the operation of recycling center as required including waiting on and assisting customers.
  • Perform building maintenance and custodial duties as required.
  • Work any days or hours assigned by management.
  • May perform welding, fabrication and finishing on metal projects.
  • Safety for oneself and others is a primary responsibility of every employee.
  • May be required to obtain a CDL within twelve months of being hired.

Marginal Functions:

  • May operate solid waste truck, assume responsibilities of the Senior Solid Waste Collector as necessary.
  • Perform a variety of maintenance activities, including building and grounds maintenance.
  • Respond to and resolve citizen inquires and complaints.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Basic operational techniques used to operate solid waste heavy equipment.
  • Occupational Hazards and standard safety practices.
  • City Streets Layout
  • Pertinent Federal, State, or Local Laws, regulations, or ordinances.

Required Skills and Competencies:

  • Following standard safety precautions.
  • Performing minor maintenance activities on sanitation heavy equipment.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Maintaining physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:
  • Walking, standing, lifting or sitting for extended periods of time
  • Operating assigned equipment and vehicles
  • Maintaining effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:
  • Making observations
  • Communicating with others
  • Reading and writing
  • Operating assigned equipment.

Experience and Training Guidelines-Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

  • Must have a minimum of a High School diploma or GED.
  • One year of solid waste collection experience is desirable.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Environmental Conditions:

  • Travel from site to site; field environment; exposure to noise, dust, smoke, fumes, gases, infectious materials, and inclement weather conditions; work around heavy sanitation equipment.

Physical Conditions:

  • Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking, standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time; moderate to heavy lifting (up to 50 pounds); and operating motorized equipment and vehicles.

License or Certificate:

  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must have or be able to possess a valid commercial driver's license.
