About the Role
We are seeking a skilled Utility Solar Technician – Operations & Maintenance (O&M) to join our team. This position is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) power plants. The ideal candidate will have experience working with electrical and mechanical components in a solar power environment and will play a key role in ensuring optimal plant performance, safety, and reliability.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and corrective repairs on utility-scale solar PV systems.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair electrical, mechanical, and communications issues in solar power plants.
- Conduct performance analysis and system monitoring to optimize energy production.
- Ensure compliance with safety procedures, company policies, and regulatory requirements (OSHA, NEC, NESC, NFPA 70E).
- Work with SCADA systems, inverters, transformers, switchgear, and other power generation equipment.
- Perform high-voltage switching operations and adhere to LOTO (Lockout/Tagout) procedures.
- Maintain accurate documentation, including service reports, maintenance logs, and inventory records.
- Assist with commissioning and testing of new solar facilities and equipment upgrades.
- Coordinate with asset management and remote operations teams to resolve system performance issues.
- Support environmental compliance efforts, including vegetation management and wildlife protection.
- Operate and maintain tools, equipment, and company vehicles in a safe and professional manner.
Qualifications & Skills
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent (technical certifications preferred).
- Experience: 2+ years of experience in solar PV operations, electrical maintenance, or related fields.
- Certifications: NABCEP PV Associate or NABCEP PV Installer preferred. OSHA 30, NFPA 70E, and First Aid/CPR certification a plus.
- Technical Knowledge:
- Strong understanding of electrical systems, including inverters, transformers, circuit breakers, and power distribution.
- Experience with high-voltage systems (up to 35kV) and safe switching practices.
- Familiarity with SCADA systems, DAS (Data Acquisition Systems), and remote monitoring tools.
- Ability to interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
- Skills:
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a field-based environment.
- Proficiency in using electrical testing equipment (multimeters, IV curve tracers, infrared cameras).
- Excellent communication and documentation skills.
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work in outdoor environments under various weather conditions.
- Comfortable working at heights, on ladders, and in confined spaces.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physically demanding tasks.
- Willingness to travel to multiple sites as needed.
