Job description

We are seeking a BESS Engineer to lead the technical design, specification development, and vendor coordination for utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). In this role, you will serve as the primary subject matter expert for energy storage technology. You will translate project requirements into comprehensive technical specifications, evaluate equipment integrators, and oversee the engineering integration of BESS assets into our renewable energy portfolio.

System Design & Technical Specification
  • Define and develop comprehensive technical specifications for utility-scale BESS projects.
  • Determine optimal battery chemistry, system sizing, augmentation strategies, and duration requirements.
  • Design system architectures including battery enclosures, inverters (PCS), transformers, and auxiliary power.
  • Establish key engineering parameters for thermal management (HVAC/liquid cooling) and fire protection.
  • Lead technical evaluations of BESS integrators, tier-1 battery manufacturers, and PCS vendors.
  • Review vendor technical proposals, single-line diagrams, and equipment layouts for compliance.
  • Coordinate directly with integrators to resolve hardware, software, and communication interface gaps.
  • Oversee factory acceptance testing (FAT) protocols and witness testing schedules with vendors.
Controls & Grid Integration
  • Define functional requirements for the BESS Energy Management System (EMS) and SCADA interfaces.
  • Ensure control systems align with grid interconnection requirements, voltage regulation, and frequency response.
  • Collaborate with civil, electrical, and structural engineering teams to integrate BESS footprints into site layouts.
  • Support commissioning and site acceptance testing (SAT) by troubleshooting technical anomalies.
Required Experience
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience: 3–5 years of dedicated engineering experience in utility-scale battery energy storage systems.
  • Track Record: Proven experience authoring technical specifications and managing major BESS integrator relationships.
  • AutoCAD Civil 3D layout experience
Technical & Soft Skills
  • Deep knowledge of lithium-ion technology, degradation profiles, and BESS safety standards (e.g., UL 9540, NFPA 855).
  • Strong understanding of power conversion systems (PCS), DC/DC converters, and MV transformer design.
  • Familiarity with industrial communication protocols including Modbus, DNP3, and IEC 61850.
  • Capable of providing BOM estimates.
  • Exceptional communication skills to effectively bridge technical requirements between vendors and internal developers.
