Job summary

The University of Virginia is seeking a detail‑oriented Software Test Engineer to join our engineering team in Charlottesville, VA. You will design, develop, and execute test plans, collaborating with software developers and algorithm engineers to ensure quality and reliability across web, mobile, and cloud applications.

You will create and maintain test scripts, automate where possible, and contribute to test metrics, plans, and release readiness.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in CS, engineering, or related field (or equivalent practical experience).
• 2+ years of software testing experience.
• Experience writing and executing test cases, test plans, and test scripts.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
• Experience testing cross‑platform mobile apps and cloud server applications.
• Hands‑on experience with test automation tools/frameworks.
• Familiarity with API testing tools (Postman).
• Experience with bug tracking and test management tools (Jira).
• Experience with automation servers (Jenkins).
• Understanding of version control systems (Git).
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment.
• Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Design, write, and execute manual and automated test cases based on requirements and specs.
• Develop and maintain automated test scripts and frameworks (UI, API, regression).
• Identify, document, and track defects using bug-tracking tools (e.g., Jira).
• Collaborate with developers to reproduce, diagnose, and verify fixes.
• Participate in requirement reviews and design meetings to provide QA input early.
• Perform functional, regression, integration, performance, and load testing as needed.
• Set up and maintain test environments and test data.
• Analyze test results, generate metrics, and report on coverage and release readiness.
• Create documents that capture test operations and report results to the team.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of testing processes and tools.
