We are searching for the best talent for Software Engineering Interns within Robotics R&D.

Purpose:

This internship is based in Santa Clara, California and offers a unique opportunity for Software Engineering students passionate about advancing surgery today and where it goes next.

As a Software Engineering Intern within Robotics, you will contribute to the design, development, and architecture of the software systems that powers robotic surgical platforms. Our teams work across a broad range of technologies, including user interfaces, embedded software, firmware, robotics algorithms, AI/ML, cybersecurity, virtualization, visualization, and distributed systems.

Depending on project needs and interests, you may contribute across the software stack, from real-time embedded software and firmware to application development, visualization tools, and system architecture. This role provides hands‑on experience across the full software development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, software design, architecture, implementation, testing, performance optimization, and deployment. You will work alongside expert engineers to help deliver innovative technologies that improve surgical care and patient outcomes worldwide.

You will be responsible for:
  • Design, develop, test, document and maintain software for real-time, safety critical robotic applications.
  • Contribute to software architecture, framework design, and system-level design for robotic platforms.
  • Implement and enhance software components across application, embedded, firmware, user interface, and algorithmic domains.
  • Participate in software design reviews, code reviews, debugging activities, and root cause investigations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including systems, electrical, mechanical, quality, and clinical engineering partners.
  • Apply software quality, cybersecurity, reliability, and maintainability best practices throughout the development lifecycle.

Responsibilities may vary based on the specific role or project within this internship track.

Qualifications / Requirements:
Education
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited program pursuing a bachelor's, graduate or PhD degree, returning to an academic program after the completion of the internship.
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 reflective of all coursework
  • Commitment to June 1 - August 20, 2027, or June 21 - September 10, 2027; term dates to align with cohort
  • Available to work full-time (40 hours/week) and during hours agreed upon with the hiring manager.
  • Target majors include Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Vision, Data Science, Automation Engineering, or closely related field.
Must Have
  • Permanent US work authorization without the need for sponsorship now, or in the future (The company does not provide sponsorship for employment visa status. Students currently in the country on CPT, OPT, or STEM OPT require future sponsorship).
Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Experience developing software in C, modern C++, Python, Qt/QML, or similar programming languages.
  • Familiarity with software design principles, object‑oriented programming, data structures, and algorithms.
  • Experience with Embedded systems, Firmware development, microcontrollers or Real‑Time operating systems.
  • Experience developing user interfaces, simulations, visualization tools, or distributed software applications.
  • Exposure to robotics, controls, AI/ML, computer vision, cybersecurity, virtualization, or cloud technologies.
  • Familiarity with software development tools and practices such as Git, automated testing, CI/CD, and code reviews.
  • Strong problem‑solving, debugging, and analytical skills with the ability to tackle complex and ambiguous challenges.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is:

The expected base pay for this position is Sophomore $32/hr, Junior $35.50/hr, Senior $39/hr, Master's degree $46.50/hr, PhD degree $61/hr.

Additional Description for Pay Transparency: Co-Ops/Interns are eligible to participate in Company sponsored employee medical benefits in accordance with the terms of the plan. Co-Ops and Interns are eligible for the following sick time benefits: up to 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington, up to 56 hours per calendar year Co-Ops and Interns are eligible to participate in the Company's consolidated retirement plan (pension)
