Job summary

Johnson & Johnson is seeking Clinical Engineering & Human Factors Interns in Santa Clara, CA. This role supports the development of medical devices and robotic systems, collaborating with clinicians to translate needs into design improvements.

You will contribute to user research, risk assessment, and clinical workflow modeling, gaining exposure to medical device development and human factors engineering in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited university or college program throughout the internship (bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD).
  • Must be available to work full-time (40 hours/week) and during hours agreed with the hiring manager.
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 for all coursework.
  • Commitment to June 1 – August 21, 2027, or June 21 – September 10, 2027, term dates.
  • Interest or experience in healthcare technology, clinical systems, or biomedical engineering.
  • Permanent US work authorization without sponsorship now or in the future.

Responsibilities

  • Research disease states, treatment options, patient pathways, and surgical workflows to inform product development.
  • Contribute to identification and analysis of user needs, use scenarios, workflow requirements, and design inputs.
  • Support planning and execution of user research, usability evaluations, and product assessments in simulated or clinical environments.
  • Analyze qualitative and quantitative data from studies to identify insights and communicate findings.
  • Develop and maintain clinical, risk management, and traceability documentation.
  • Develop clinical workflows, task analyses, and product use scenarios for development and validation.
  • Build reports, presentations, visualizations, and summaries to communicate outcomes.
  • Collaborate with physicians and end users to translate insights into product improvements.
  • Develop clinically relevant test methods and evaluation approaches.

We are searching for the best talent for Clinical Engineering & Human Factors Interns within Robotics R&D. Purpose: Join our Clinical Engineering team in Santa Clara, CA, and help advance healthcare technology through innovative engineering solutions. This internship offers hands‑on experience supporting the definition, development, and evaluation of medical technologies, including laboratory testing, system characterization, and engineering studies that inform product design and improve patient care. As an intern on the Clinical Engineering & Human Factors Engineering team, you will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support the development of innovative medical devices and robotic surgical systems. You will contribute to understanding user needs, evaluating clinical workflows, assessing risks, and generating insights that guide product development. This role provides exposure to both the clinical and human-centered aspects of medical device design, helping ensure products are safe, effective, and instinctive for healthcare professionals and patients. You will be responsible for:

  • Research disease states, treatment options, patient pathways, surgical workflows, and competitive technologies to inform product development.
  • Contribute to the identification and analysis of user needs, use scenarios, workflow requirements, and design inputs.
  • Support planning and execution of user research, usability evaluations, and product assessments in simulated or clinical-use environments.
  • Analyze qualitative and quantitative data from studies, observations, and evaluations to identify insights and communicate findings.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of human factors, clinical, and risk management documentation, including traceability activities and use-related risk assessments.
  • Develop and detail clinical workflows, task analyses, and product use scenarios to support product development and validation activities.
  • Build reports, presentations, visualizations, and summaries to communicate project outcomes and recommendations.
  • Collaborate with physicians, healthcare professionals, and end users to gather feedback and translate insights into product improvements.
  • Develop clinically relevant test methods, models, and evaluation approaches to assess product performance and user interaction.

Responsibilities may be tailored or specialized within either Clinical Engineering or Human Factors Engineering based on the specific project, team, or role within this internship track.

Qualifications / Requirements
  • Education Currently enrolled in an accredited university or college program throughout the internship (bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD).
  • University student status: Undergrad Sophomore or higher; Master’s and PhD considered for advanced areas.
  • Must-Have Available to work full-time (40 hours/week) and during the hours agreed upon with the hiring manager.
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 reflective of all coursework
  • Commitment to June 1 – August 21, 2027, or June 21 – September 10, 2027, term dates to align with cohort
  • Interest or experience in healthcare technology, clinical systems, or biomedical engineering.
  • Target majors include Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Systems Engineering, Health Informatics, Psychology, Cognitive Science, or closely related field.
  • Nice-to-have Proven ability to rapidly learn, evaluate, and adopt new AI tools and platforms to meet evolving project needs.
  • Basic understanding of medical device development and design control.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills for collaboration with internal and external customers.
  • Knowledge of healthcare safety standards and device documentation.

Pay and Benefits

The anticipated base pay range for this position is : The expected base pay for this position is Sophomore $32/hr, Junior $35.50/hr, Senior $39/hr, Master’s degree $46.50/hr, PhD degree $61/hr.

Additional Description for Pay Transparency: Co-Ops/Interns are eligible to participate in Company sponsored employee medical benefits in accordance with the terms of the plan. Co-Ops and Interns are eligible for the following sick time benefits: up to 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington, up to 56 hours per calendar year Co-Ops and Interns are eligible to participate in the Company’s consolidated retirement plan (pension)
