Job summary

Google Cloud is seeking a software engineer to work on Rust acceleration in production within the Infrastructure team. You will collaborate on interop between C++ and Rust, prioritize dependencies, and drive library migrations in line with technical and business requirements.

The role focuses on designing a Rust implementation of dependencies for low-level systems software and planning a safe migration path that meets customer needs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience required.
  • At least 5 years of software development experience and solid CS fundamentals.
  • Strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, and software design.

Responsibilities

  • Work on Rust Acceleration in Production - Infrastructure Team with C++/Rust interop.
  • Coordinate with owners to ensure rewrite design and ownership transfer.
  • Design the Rust implementation of dependencies for low-level systems software.
  • Plan and execute a migration path aligned with customer needs and safe rollout.

  • 5 years of experience in software development.
  • Experience in computer science, data structures, algorithms, and software design.

Preferred qualifications:
  • Experience programming in C or C++.
  • Experience with programming language design or compilers.
  • Experience working with Rust.
  • Proficiency with google3 development and an understanding of its infrastructure landscape, or the Rust OSS ecosystem of infrastructure components.

Individual pay is determined by factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
US: $174000 - $252000 (USD) + 15% bonus target + equity + benefits

Responsibilities:
  • Work on Rust Acceleration in Production - Infrastructure Team alongside the broader Core Rust team (C++/Rust interop, platform, library development experience, and AI tooling), and partner to prioritize the selection of dependencies and deliver library migrations in accordance with technical and business requirements.
  • Align with the owning parties, ensure they participate in the rewrite design and implementation, and ensure that they will be prepared to take full ownership.
  • Design the optimal end state of a Rust implementation of the dependency, relying on the requirements, goals, and shape of a Rust software ecosystem specialized for low-level systems software when developing this design.
  • Design and execute on the migration path, grounded in customers' needs.Consider the preferred code migration approach, the desired level of intellectual control of the codebase, and safe rollout constraints.
