The Apple Services Engineering (ASE) team is building the next generation of foundational tools that empower software developers at Apple to build products that our customers love. The Observability team within ASE is a fast moving, highly skilled team that is designing and building a suite of platforms and services that help Apple engineers observe and get insights into their systems. We are seeking a highly skilled Java and Scala Distributed Systems Engineer to join our team. This role demands a deep understanding of large-scale data systems, a strong foundation in observability, and a proven ability to deliver complex projects from inception to completion. Your responsibilities will include:

  1. Requirement gathering across cross functional teams
  2. Developing practical, fault-tolerant high-performance distributed systems
  3. Leading and participating in technical design discussions across cross functional teams
  4. Gain in-depth understanding of the domain and come up with creative ideas in the domain
  5. Willingness to lead independent research in the field of work
  6. Mentor other engineers in the team

Minimum Qualifications

  1. BS or MS in CS or equivalent
  2. 5+ years of industry experience
  3. Deep understanding of core CS concepts including data structures, algorithms and concurrent programming
  4. Proficiency in programming languages Java, Scala
  5. Experience with designing, implementing and supporting highly scalable infrastructure services
  6. Deep understanding and work experience in distributed systems
  7. Experience designing and using columnar storage systems
  8. Strong attention to detail and excellent analytical capabilities

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience in building Observability platforms is preferred
  2. Experience in building query engines is a plus
  3. Familiarity with time series database internals
  4. Experience with Observability solutions using OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana
  5. Passion for developing clear, robust and maintainable code
  6. Ability to learn and apply new technologies and frameworks
  7. Great communication skills

Pay & Benefits

At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $135,400 and $250,600, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.

Apple employees also have the opportunity to become an Apple shareholder through participation in Apple’s discretionary employee stock programs. Apple employees are eligible for discretionary restricted stock unit awards, and can purchase Apple stock at a discount if voluntarily participating in Apple’s Employee Stock Purchase Plan. You’ll also receive benefits including: Comprehensive medical and dental coverage, retirement benefits, a range of discounted products and free services, and for formal education related to advancing your career at Apple, reimbursement for certain educational expenses — including tuition.
