Job summary

Frontgrade Technologies is seeking an Embedded Systems Software Engineer IV to lead the development and integration of software for mission-processing systems used in space and military applications. The role spans embedded Linux, boot software, BSPs, drivers, firmware, FPGA, and hardware interfaces.

This principal hands-on position requires deep expertise, technical leadership, and collaboration across disciplines to deliver high-reliability solutions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering or computer science discipline with strong embedded software background.
  • 8+ years of specialized experience in embedded software and hardware integration, or equivalent combos.
  • Extensive C/C++ experience and knowledge of embedded Linux, BSPs, bootloaders, and kernel integration.
  • Ability to lead architecture, integration, verification, and controlled product releases.
  • Experience with JTAG, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and protocol analyzers is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Architect, develop, integrate, and maintain embedded software for mission-processing systems.
  • Lead embedded Linux, bootloader, BSP, device-driver, and board bring-up activities.
  • Develop MCU firmware for power control, sequencing, monitoring, and communications.
  • Define interfaces among processors, FPGAs, microcontrollers, storage, and networks.
  • Resolve complex issues across software, firmware, FPGA, and hardware.
  • Provide technical leadership for requirements, reviews, and releases.
  • Improve engineering practices and mentor other engineers.

Frontgrade Technologies is seeking an Embedded Systems Software Engineer IV to lead the development and integration of software for advanced mission-processing systems used in space and military applications. These rugged, high-reliability systems integrate processing, I/O, power, storage, networking, FPGA, and other specialized modules.

This is a principal, hands‑on individual-contributor role spanning embedded Linux, boot software, board support packages, device drivers, microcontroller firmware, FPGA logic, hardware interfaces, and application-level software. The engineer possesses extensive knowledge within a specialty area and across related software, firmware, FPGA, and hardware disciplines. This individual provides technical leadership and applies new processes, tools, and skills to improve the organization’s capabilities.

Responsibilities
  • Architect, develop, integrate, and maintain embedded software for mission-processing systems.
  • Lead embedded Linux, bootloader, BSP, device-driver, and board bring-up activities.
  • Architect and develop microcontroller firmware for power control, sequencing, monitoring, communications, fault management, and board management.
  • Define interfaces among processors, FPGAs, microcontrollers, storage devices, networks, and custom peripherals.
  • Lead the resolution of complex issues spanning applications, operating systems, drivers, firmware, FPGA logic, and hardware.
  • Provide technical leadership for requirements, architecture, trade studies, reviews, verification, documentation, and releases.
  • Improve engineering practices while collaborating across disciplines and mentoring other engineers.
Experience
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum eight (8) years of experience in a specialized functional discipline. OR (12) years of experience may be considered in lieu of a Bachelors Degree. OR (6) years of experience may be considered w/ a Masters Degree. OR (3) years of experience may be considered w/ a PhD.
  • Extensive embedded-software development experience for complex hardware platforms, including advanced C and C++ proficiency.
  • Strong knowledge of embedded Linux, BSPs, bootloaders, device drivers, kernel integration, and board bring-up.
  • Strong knowledge of embedded interfaces and system‑level debugging across software, firmware, programmable logic, and hardware.
  • Ability to lead architecture, implementation, integration, verification, configuration management, and controlled product releases.
  • Ability to interpret technical requirements and hardware designs, mentor engineers, and communicate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience using JTAG debuggers, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and protocol analyzers.
  • Experience supporting products through architecture, development, integration, qualification, production introduction, and sustaining engineering.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Aerospace, defense, avionics, space, or other high-reliability product development.
  • ARM, Power Architecture, or RISC-V platforms; real-time operating systems; and bare-metal development.
  • AMD/Xilinx or Intel FPGA tools and embedded Linux environments such as Yocto, Buildroot, or PetaLinux.
  • Development of FPGA logic integration using VHDL, Verilog, or SystemVerilog.
