Job summary

State Employees' Credit Union seeks an experienced Software Engineer to lead and mentor teams, define and implement solutions within the Application Development infrastructure, and collaborate with IT and business stakeholders. Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor within 25% development focus, guiding engineers and teams.
  • Define, develop, and implement solutions within Application Development infrastructure.
  • Provide guidance for vendors and other IT areas during projects or BAU.
  • Offer SME guidance of supported solutions with level 2 support as needed.
  • Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers for growth and development.
  • Lead design, development, and implementation of complex projects with timely delivery.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot complex technical issues; conduct root-cause analysis.
  • Work in Agile environments with JIRA/Confluence/Helix for project tracking.
  • Perform technical reviews of designs, code, and documentation for quality.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation including specs and test plans.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends, technologies, and best practices.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams; act as technical liaison.
  • Provide on-call coverage after hours as needed; ensure minimal outages.
  • Research and evaluate new technologies to improve processes and efficiency.

Essential Responsibilities
  • 30% Lead and Mentor
  • Work closely with Business and IT leaders to define, develop, and implement solutions within the Application Development infrastructure as well as associated integration endpoints.
  • Provide guidance for vendors, and other IT areas, or business division during project efforts or BAU support.
  • Provide subject matter expertise of the supported solution and processes with level 2 support as needed.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, fostering their professional growth and development.
  • 25% Development and Problem‑Solving
  • Lead the design, development, and implementation of complex projects, ensuring timely and successful delivery.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot complex technical issues, providing effective solutions.
  • Conduct root cause analysis of problems and implement corrective actions as needed.
  • Experience in Product Development Lifecycle, ideally within Agile methodologies, sprint planning, and project tracking tools (e.g., JIRA, Confluence, Helix).
  • 15% Documentation
  • Conduct technical reviews of designs, code, and documentation to ensure quality and compliance.
  • Develop and maintain clear and concise technical documentation, including design specifications, test plans, and user manuals.
  • Ensure proper documentation and archiving of all work.
  • 10% Stay abreast of the latest industry trends, technologies, and best practices
  • 10% Collaboration:
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to ensure project success.
  • Technical liaison to software engineers, systems engineers, database administrators, quality assurance, and other IT and business teams
  • Provide periodic "on‑call" coverage after business hours, weekends and/or holidays as needed for minimal outages/production impacts.
  • 10% Research and evaluate new technologies and tools to improve engineering processes and efficiency.
Required Education & Experience

Bachelor’s in software engineering, computer science and information systems

  • Additional five years of relevant experience can be considered in lieu of degree
Required Relevant Experience

Minimum direct years experience: 5+ years preferred

Required Skills
  • Proficient and dedicated to writing reliable, testable, maintainable, and performant code.
  • Engage for Support & Troubleshooting as well as Implementation and Conversion Projects with following vendors Diebold Nixdorf, Hyosung, CFS Solutions, CV Systems, and Verafin.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Strong understanding of SDLC and Agile methodologies.
  • Strong Knowledge of JavaScript, Phython, JSON & XML, HTML5, Web Services: REST and/or SOAP API.
  • Proficiency in relevant software tools (e.g., Power Bi, SQL, PowerQuery).
  • Familiarity with relevant compliance standards such as PCI‑DSS and GDPR
  • Must be able to confidently interact with technical, non‑technical, and management staff.
  • Perform full‑stack programming tasks according to established company, department, and project standards. Implements code that is clear, concise, tested and easily understood by others. Performs code reviews, code merges, and design reviews with peers.
  • Work cross‑functionally with product teams, project managers, business analysts, stakeholders, and other engineering teams to create fast, intuitive, stable, and easy to use software to meet the needs of the organization and our members.
  • Perform a variety of actions that evaluate and improve department systems, processes, and applications. Provides new feature time estimates for system changes and assists in implementing modifications. Ability to effectively coach, train and mentor more junior engineers and help them solve technical challenges.
  • Collects data related to user requests and determines scope, time estimates, and system impacts. Inspect business and programming specifications, coding, test plans, documentation, and implementation plans for accuracy.
  • Designs, creates, and executes system integrated test plans and automation scripts to validate application functionality.
  • Implement new features, troubleshoot bugs, and assist in the support of production incidents.
  • Performs code reviews, code merges, and design reviews with peers. Must have strong analytical skills with high attention to detail.
  • Designs functional system integration tests and automation scripts where applicable.
  • Collaborative and team player attitude with excellent communication skills both written and oral.
  • Proficient in multiple industry‑adopted programming languages.
  • Strong experience working between multiple projects simultaneously, with varied degrees of complexity and duration.
  • Experience working in large, enterprise level programs/projects, preferably with a background in Financial Services.
  • Experience and/or understanding in Financial Services, or related industry is a plus. Ability to effectively coach and mentor more junior engineers. Proven ability to not only build technology solutions but explain your solution architecture and technology choices to enterprise Architects and senior leadership.
  • Must be able to speak English fluently.
  • Experience assessing and managing technology and cyber security risks related to application, network, and infrastructure.
  • Perform review and refinement of the product backlog and assist with their prioritization.
  • Drive the evolution of our technology platforms and development standards to ensure that we deliver scalable software solutions to business requirements.
  • Serves as on‑call responder for software the team supports.
  • Ability to not only build technology solutions but explain your solution architecture and technology choices to enterprise architects and senior leadership.
  • Proven ability to define and solve complex business problems, leveraging best in class technical solutions.
