Job summary

Alphatec Spine is seeking a Software Engineer II to advance software for surgical navigation and robotics. You will design, develop, test, and document software to meet user needs and FDA regulatory standards, working with cross-disciplinary teams and potentially visiting clinical sites.

The role emphasizes C++ on Unix/Linux, Agile processes, and collaboration with product owners and senior engineers. Travel up to 15% may be required as projects evolve.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of commercial software product development.
  • Experience with C++ and Linux is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with Agile software development processes and tools.
  • Experience in a government-regulated product environment desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement high-quality Unix/Linux applications and frameworks.
  • Develop C++ application software.
  • Assist product owners and senior engineers evaluating features, feasibility and tradeoffs.
  • Perform integration and system testing of software and software/hardware systems.
  • Create design artifacts, test plans and case documentation.
  • Provide field support; investigate issues, root-cause analysis; drive improvements; occasional on-site visits.
  • Support clinical prototyping and evaluation in cadaveric labs.
  • Maintain version control, unit tests, and documentation for regulatory efforts.
  • Travel up to 15% of the time.

Job description

The Software Engineer II position will support software development for ATEC's surgical navigation and robotics platform. They will support activities for software development to ensure ATEC?s cutting edge medical products meet our user's needs and FDA quality and reliability standards. Designing, developing, testing, maintaining and documenting/validating software applications. Participate in all phases of product development as needed such as reviewing requirements, design, usability, risk assessment, and testing execution. Contributes to the completion of work group objectives through building relationships and consensus to reach agreements on assignments. Interfacing with mechanical, electrical, systems, software and test engineers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Design and implement high quality applications and frameworks targeting the Unix/Linux platform
  • Design and implement application software in C++
  • Assist product owners and senior engineers in analyzing future product features, including feasibility, effort, and technical tradeoffs
  • Perform integration and system level testing of software and software/hardware systems
  • Develop documentation related to software development projects (design artifacts, test plans/cases, etc.)
  • Assist with technical support for field-deployed software applications as needed. Collaborate with clinical and field teams to gather information, investigate issues, contribute to root-cause analysis, and help drive product improvements. Participate in occasional on-site visits to support issue diagnosis and troubleshooting.
  • Support and participate in clinical prototyping, testing, and formal evaluation in cadaveric surgical lab settings
  • Maintain rigorous version control, unit testing, and documentation to support regulatory evaluation and formal test efforts
  • Ability to travel up to 15% of the time
Requirements

  • Experience with commercial software development. Experience with medical device software a plus
  • Experience with C++ and Linux strongly preferred
  • Experience with Agile software development methodologies, Git / Azure DevOps / Jira
  • Experience in a government-regulated product environment desirable
Education and Experience
  • 3+ years experience in commercial software product development
  • BS/MS degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field preferred
