Marqeta is seeking a Software Engineer II to join the Core Edge Processing team. You will write production code for core payment processing systems that route and authorize transactions, and contribute to cryptographic infrastructure in a real-time, always-on environment.

The role supports a remote work model within Canada and emphasizes learning from senior engineers, growing in Java and distributed systems, and delivering high-quality software that impacts transaction success.

Job description

As Marqeta's Software Engineer II on the Core Edge Processing team, you will write and ship production code at the heart of our processing systems, learning alongside senior engineers on a team running real-time, always-on payment infrastructure. Core Edge Processing owns the systems that route and authorize transactions across card networks, along with the cryptographic infrastructure underneath them. This is a hands-on role where the quality of your code directly shapes whether transactions succeed.

The Impact You’ll Have

• Ship production code across our routing and processing stack, with senior engineers in your corner
• Own well-scoped features and bug fixes end-to-end, from design discussion all the way to production
• Join the on-call rotation and incident response, building real operational fluency on live payment systems
• Grow your Java, distributed systems, and payment processing skills through hands-on project work
• Work side by side with senior and staff engineers to steadily expand your technical scope

Who You Are

• An engineer with 2+ years of professional experience, including deploying and operating mission-critical services in AWS
• Solid in Java fundamentals, with a real interest in going deeper
• Comfortable debugging and troubleshooting production issues, with teammates to back you up
• Eager to learn distributed systems and the world of payment processing
• A strong communicator who asks good questions and takes feedback well

Nice-To-Haves

• Exposure to payment processing, card issuing, or network integration concepts
• Familiarity with cryptography or key management concepts
• Prior on-call or production-support experience

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Marqeta calibrates pay to a competitive value according to working location. When determining salaries, we consider several factors including, but not limited to, skills, prior experience, and work location. The new-hire base salary range for this full-time position, reflected in CAD, is: $92,900 - $116,100
