What Is the Opportunity?

Travelers is seeking a Software Engineer I to join our organization as we grow and transform our Technology landscape. Individual will complete intermediate end to end engineering tasks for specific system assignments including developing, analyzing, configuring, testing, debugging, troubleshooting, documenting, health monitoring/alerting, and implementing based on user or system design specifications, as well as participating in troubleshooting, conducting impact analysis and escalating appropriately. Applicants must be authorized to work for ANY employer in the U.S. The company does not sponsor/support H-1B petitions, TN, or Forms I-983/STEM OPT, for this role.

What Will You Do?

This engineer will contribute to the BSI Cyber Scan platform — a multi-codebase system spanning Elixir services, Python components, JavaScript/React front-end, PostgreSQL databases, and AWS Lambda/Step functions. The platform is central to Travelers' cyber underwriting capability and feeds multiple stakeholder groups: Data Science, Risk Services, Data Platform, Underwriting, Pricing, and RQI Platforms.

  • Performing analysis, design, development, and configuration functions and defining technical requirements for assignments of intermediate complexity.
  • Participating with the team to perform analysis, assessment, and resolution for defects and incidents of intermediate complexity, escalating appropriately.
  • Working within team guidelines to independently tackle well-scoped problems.
  • Seeking opportunities to expand technical knowledge and capabilities.
What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?
  • Delivery: Delivers work at a steady, predictable pace; decomposes assignments into small batch releases. Contributes to trade-off and negotiation discussions within the team.
  • Domain Expertise Demonstrates understanding of technical concepts necessary to do the job effectively.
  • Problem Solving Strong debugging skills — able to determine source of issues in unfamiliar code or systems. Recognizes and solves repetitive problems rather than working around them. Breaks down large problems into smaller, manageable ones.
  • Communication Clearly and concisely interacts with team members; documents work in an easy-to-follow manner. Takes in well-scoped requirements and asks the right questions to ensure clarification. Seeks out and receives constructive criticism well.
  • Leadership Self-motivated in identifying personal growth opportunities. Comfortable using AI coding assistants as part of everyday engineering work.
What is a Must Have?
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, related STEM field, or its equivalent in education and/or work experience.
  • 2 additional years of software engineering experience.
