Job summary

Travelers is hiring a Senior Software Engineer in Hartford, CT. You will design, develop, and deliver large-scale software with end-to-end ownership, guiding teams and influencing technical decisions across applications and platforms.

You will work with AWS, CI/CD, API development, and modern frameworks like React/Node.js, while mentoring others and driving quality, security, and performance in a collaborative, agile environment.

Qualifications

Compensation Overview

The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

What Is the Opportunity?

Travelers is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join our organization as we grow and transform our Technology landscape. Individuals will complete advanced software end-to-end engineering tasks that span many parts of a system, including designing, developing, analyzing, configuring, testing, debugging, troubleshooting, documenting, health monitoring/alerting, and implementing based on user or system specifications. Individuals will also consult with users to determine hardware, software, or system functional specifications, manage the effective use of resources, act as subject matter experts across multiple applications, systems and technologies, leverage technical and business knowledge to drive the planning and execution of complex initiatives, participate in the design/development process, and provide technical leadership.

What Will You Do?
  • Perform complex analysis, advanced level design, configuration and develop functions for impactful and high-visibility tasks.
  • Take the lead on directing and implementing solutions to moderately complex, loosely scoped problems that are aligned with team goals.
  • Deliver efforts both independently and by leading other team members.
  • Lead investigation and resolution efforts for critical, high impact problems, defects, and incidents.
  • Act as a technology advocate, independently seeking opportunities where technology can be utilized to improve the business.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship while fostering a team environment.
  • Apply knowledge of current industry trends and techniques to formulate solutions within the context of assigned efforts.
  • Seek opportunities to expand technical knowledge and capabilities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?
  • Five years of programming/development experience.
  • Proven experience in leading and managing software engineering teams, with a focus on fostering team collaboration, development, and achieving project goals.
  • Familiarity with coding assistants such as Claude and GitHub Co‑Pilot.
  • Demonstrated experience with cloud computing (e.g., AWS Serverless/EKS and/or Azure).
  • Proficiency with API development (e.g., REST and/or GraphQL).
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform and AWS CDK.
  • Working knowledge of frameworks/libraries such as React.js and/or Node.js.
  • Proven proficiency with scripting languages such as JavaScript, TypeScript, and/or Python.
  • Understanding of and experience with eventing systems such as Kafka.
  • Experience with relational databases such as DB2, MySQL, and/or PostgreSQL.
  • Familiarity with document databases such as MongoDB and/or DynamoDB.
  • Experience with automated testing and unit testing (NUnit/XUnit, Moq, Jest, Cypress).
  • Proficiency with source control (Git/GitHub).
  • Proven CI/CD experience (CloudBees Jenkins, Jenkins Open Source, and/or Azure DevOps).
  • Understanding of OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect (OIDC).
  • Experience with observability/monitoring platforms such as Dynatrace, ELK stack, and OpenTelemetry.
  • Familiarity and experience working with Agile/Scrum methodologies and tools such as Jira and Rally.
  • Advanced delivery skills, including the ability to determine the software design strategy and methodology to be used for efforts.
  • Domain expertise and the ability to develop business partnerships and influence priorities.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills using data and proofs of concepts to find creative solutions.
  • Decision‑making skills that involve significant factors with broad implications.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to describe technology concepts in business terms, document initiatives concisely, collaborate effectively, and listen attentively.
  • Advanced leadership skills, able to act when there is no clear owner, inspire and motivate others, and influence teammates.
What is a Must Have?
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, related STEM field, or equivalent experience.
  • Additional 6 years of software engineering experience.
