Job summary

Chalk is seeking its first software engineer dedicated to developer productivity. You will own the Bazel build system, drive toolchain improvements, and enable fast, hermetic C++/Rust builds used by every Chalk engineer.

Chalk’s engine is C++ and Rust with a Python interface, and it maintains a 100k QPS latency bar. This on-site role requires strong autonomy, 5+ years of experience, and a BS in CS, with the team adopting Buildkite and Bazel practices.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional experience as a Software Engineer.
• Hands on Bazel experience with BUILD files and Starlark, toolchains, and workspace migrations.
• C++ coding experience as a Software Engineer.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work autonomously with business-minded tradeoffs.

Responsibilities

• Own our Bazel build system, including toolchains, dependency management, and remote execution.
• Create a consistent experience for engineers to run Chalk in containerized dev environments.
• Establish test and benchmark patterns.
• Own CI health including speed, reliability, and completion.
• Drive down test flakiness and improve build/test performance.
