Job summary

GRAIL is seeking a Build Engineer to join our DevOps / Platform Engineering organization in Sunnyvale, CA. You will own and enhance build-system workflows in a Bazel-based monorepo, improve CI reliability, and develop internal tooling to accelerate engineering and research efforts.

The role offers flexible on-site/hybrid work with a minimum on-site requirement and collaboration across Go, Python, TS, and Java codebases.

Qualifications

• 4+ years building CI/CD, build systems, or developer tooling.
• 2+ years with a large-scale build system (Bazel, Buck, Pants, Gradle, or CMake).
• 2+ years building CI/CD pipelines in GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or similar.
• 3+ years professional coding in Go, Python, TypeScript, or Java.
• 1+ years on AWS and Kubernetes.
• BS in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

• Own and improve Bazel-based build-system workflows covering rules, tests, dependencies, caching, and diagnostics.
• Improve CI performance, reliability, and observability; diagnose failures and flaky tests.
• Collaborate with engineering and research to remove friction in local builds, tests, CI, and release workflows.
• Build and maintain internal tools, automation, and self-service workflows.
• Diagnose complex build and CI failures across Go, Python, TypeScript, and Java codebases.
• Collaborate with DevOps on AWS and Kubernetes infra related to builds and delivery workflows.
• Establish standards and reusable patterns for build systems and developer tooling.
• Take accountability for ambiguous productivity problems and drive measurable improvements.
• Use modern AI coding agents to explore codebases, investigate failures, prototype tooling.
