Job summary

Waystar, Inc. is seeking a Software Engineer in the Patient Payments squad to design, build, test, and maintain full stack solutions used by health system staff and patients.

We value collaboration with product, UX, and other engineers, a pragmatic approach to reducing tech debt, and mentoring teammates as we scale our Vue and PHP-based applications on AWS. Open to mid-level and senior engineers who care about user experience and code quality.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of professional full stack web development experience.
• Object-oriented programming with PHP.
• Relational databases with MySQL.
• Modern JavaScript frameworks such as Vue.
• Experience with AWS SQS and distributed systems.
• Testing: unit and integration testing.
• Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools (Copilot, etc.).
• Agile development practices.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain software across the full SDLC.
• Collaborate with product managers, UX designers, and other engineers to understand requirements.
• Participate in code reviews, ensuring quality and maintainability.
• Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve production issues in a timely manner.
• Contribute to improvement of development processes, tools, and methodologies.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to a collaborative team environment.

ABOUT THIS POSITION

As a Software Engineer in the Patient Payments organization at Waystar, you will solve problems that affect real people. We're open to considering both mid-level and senior-level engineers who care deeply about how users interact with their applications and how other engineers will iterate on their code. You should also be passionate about using modern technologies, removing tech debt, and improving processes. Instead of asking "Why is this the way it is?", you ask "How can I make this better?" The team is responsible for building full stack applications for both health system staff and patients. The team works closely with Product to bring new features to market to best support the needs of enterprise health systems and engage with patients through a Best in KLAS user experience. The web portals utilize modern web technologies to facilitate payment processing, account management and reporting.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain robust and scalable software solutions across the full software development lifecycle. Collaborate with product managers, UX designers, and other engineers to understand requirements, define technical specifications, and deliver features that meet business needs. Participate in code reviews, ensuring code quality, maintainability, and adherence to engineering best practices. Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve software defects and production issues in a timely manner. Contribute to the improvement of development processes, tools, and methodologies. Document technical designs, architectural decisions, and operational procedures. Actively learn and apply new technologies and industry trends to enhance our products and services. Mentor junior engineers and contribute to a collaborative team environment.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field preferred (or equivalent experience) 3+ years of professional full stack web development experienceObject-oriented programming (we’re mostly PHP) Relational databases (we use MySql)Modern JavaScript frameworks such as Angular, React, or Vue (we use Vue) JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and/or MVC FrameworksUnit and integration testing methodologiesDistributed system architecture and asynchronous processing using queues (AWS SQS)Automated production logging, monitoring and alerting Experience using AI-assisted development tools (such as GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Cursor, or similar) to improve productivity and software quality Ability to effectively incorporate AI into the software development lifecycle, including coding, testing, troubleshooting, and documentation Agile Development
