Job summary

Thales in Austin, TX is seeking an experienced Software Engineer to design and develop secure identity management and biometric solutions for state and local government use. You will contribute across the full software lifecycle on mission‑critical projects in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment.

The role requires 5+ years of software engineering, strong C#, .NET, Java and Angular skills, plus database and security know‑how.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent in CS/Software Eng or related field.
  • At least 5 years of software engineering experience with modern practices.
  • Experience with C#, .NET, Java; JavaScript with Angular.
  • Proficiency with Git or Mercurial; SQL Server and MySQL knowledge.
  • Familiarity with Agile and Waterfall methodologies; secure coding practices.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate across teams to design and deploy identity management and biometrics software.
  • Oversee full SDLC from requirements to deployment and maintenance.
  • Write scalable, secure code aligned with standards and timelines.
  • Conduct testing, debugging, and performance optimization.
  • Create technical docs, specifications, and user guides.
  • Engage with customers during implementation and provide level-3 support.

Position Summary

Thales is seeking a talented and experienced Software Engineer to join our innovative team in Austin, TX. In this role, you will contribute to the design and development of advanced software solutions that empower state and local government agencies to securely issue official identification documents—such as driver’s licenses and ID cards—and leverage cutting‑edge biometric technologies to enhance public safety. As a key member of our engineering team, you will work in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment where your technical expertise will directly influence the successful delivery of mission‑critical projects. Regulatory Compliance Requirements

Must have U.S. or Dual Citizenship and be able to obtain post‑hire clearance from the Committee on Foreign Investments in the U.S. (CFIUS) and Department of Treasury.

Key Areas of Responsibility
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to design, document, develop, and deploy software solutions supporting identity management and biometric applications.
  • Participate in the full software development lifecycle, including requirements gathering, solution architecture, coding, testing, deployment, and ongoing maintenance.
  • Write high‑quality, efficient, and scalable code that adheres to industry best practices, coding standards, and project timelines.
  • Perform rigorous testing, debugging, and optimization of software applications to ensure robust performance, security, and reliability.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies, tools, and industry trends, proactively applying new knowledge to improve technical capabilities and enhance team performance.
  • Partner with product managers and stakeholders to analyze user needs, develop functional documentation, and translate requirements into precise technical specifications.
  • Participate in peer code reviews, offering constructive feedback to maintain code quality, consistency, and adherence to development standards.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including system specifications, user guides, and technical reports.
  • Serve as a Work Package Manager when assigned, taking accountability for scope definition, scheduling, and progress tracking of specific project components.
  • Work independently and collaboratively within a team of Software Engineers and Architects to deliver high‑quality solutions.
  • Engage directly with customers during project implementation phases and provide advanced (Level 3) technical support for issue resolution.
  • Support sales and proposal efforts by contributing technical expertise to bid preparation and solution design.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or foreign equivalent), or equivalent work experience.
  • At least 5 years of experience in software engineering with a solid understanding of modern software development practices and processes.
  • Proven experience with programming experience using C#, .NET, and Java.
  • Proven experience with JavaScript development with expertise in Angular (versions 9–15).
  • Proficiency with modern version control systems such as Git or Mercurial (Hg).
  • Knowledge of software security principles, including application security and data protection during transmission and at rest.
  • Experience with data modeling and database querying using SQL Server and MySQL.
  • Familiarity with Agile and Waterfall software development methodologies.
  • Understanding of best practices for web API design, usability, and security.
  • Strong knowledge of server‑side application architecture and development.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities, with a willingness to learn and adapt.
  • Practical, solution‑focused approach to solving complex problems in a cost‑effective manner.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to digest complex situations, create appropriate strategies and simplify them for execution.
  • Knowledge of PKI and security best practices
  • Knowledge of cloud‑based architectures and services (AWS, Azure)
  • Takes decisions in uncertain and ambiguous contexts.
  • Experience with project documentation (functional and technical requirements)
  • Experience with project tracking methods and tools for collaboration (Atlassian Jira, Confluence)
