Job summary

Amazon Data Services, Inc. in Seattle, WA, is seeking a Software Development Engineer to design and build software that detects congestion and reroutes traffic across the AWS backbone. You’ll work across distributed systems and networking to improve reliability and performance for AWS services.

You’ll collaborate with software, systems, and network engineers on a hybrid team, participate in design discussions and code reviews, and own features from API design to deployment at massive scale.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience.
• 1+ years of designing and developing large-scale, multi-tiered, distributed software applications, tools, systems, and services using C#, C++, Java, or Perl.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain software services that steer traffic across the AWS global backbone network.
• Develop and extend traffic engineering controllers that detect congestion and failures in real time and automatically reroute traffic to healthier paths.
• Write clean, well-tested code in a production environment where availability directly impacts AWS customers.
• Contribute to system design discussions — API design, data modelling, and scale/reliability trade-offs.
• Build and improve monitoring, alerting, and automation tooling for visibility into network health.
• Collaborate with network, systems, and partner teams to translate operational needs into software solutions.
• Participate in code reviews with thoughtful feedback.
• On-call rotations (roughly one week every two months).
• Identify opportunities to simplify, automate, or improve existing systems.
