Job description

Job ID: 2906474 | Amazon.com Services LLC

The Middle-Mile Transportation Technology team builds the underlying technology that powers Amazon’s middle-mile network across the globe. The Planning and Network team owns systems that take demand for middle-mile freight movements for Amazon and produces a plan that meets demand and supply constraints while minimizing costs, improving truck utilization along with optimizing backhaul movements. This is a unique opportunity to work on cutting edge NP Hard problems/Algorithms that save Amazon MM of $ in freight movements.

The ideal SDE will be instrumental in shaping the product direction, developing and tuning algorithms with research scientists, collaborating with stakeholders to model the planning components, and developing scalable systems that help us build a planning flywheel — highest performance, at the lowest cost, and with the best delivery experience. You will work with other tech teams to model and consume inputs such as carrier supply, cost/rates, transit times, and distances in an efficient and automated fashion. The work done on the team will help our transportation systems scale beyond just road transportation to Air, Rail, and Ocean to build a truly multi-modal global transportation network.

Key job responsibilities
  1. Design transportation solutions that scale for not just Grocery but for other Amazon business verticals.
  2. Build distributed systems that do not compromise on operator or customer experience.
  3. Insist on highest standards on the software we ship by writing high quality code, active code reviews, and actively reducing tech debt.
  4. Mentor junior engineers in designing and building scalable software.

A day in the life
  1. Influence technical strategy and architectural decisions within the team and with partner teams.
  2. Set a high bar for what we ship through active participation in code reviews.
  3. Bring in best practices in operational and engineering excellence by actively contributing to ticket resolution, infrastructure improvements, and cost reduction and monitoring/alarming.
  4. Work with product owners to ensure we do not compromise on long term goals for short-term gains.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience.
  • 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability, and scaling) of new and existing systems experience.
  • Experience programming with at least one software programming language.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent.
