Job summary

The University of Central Florida's Institute for Simulation and Training is seeking a Software Developer I to operate high performance computing clusters, manage user accounts, install software, and support researchers across campus. The role involves working with Linux systems and Slurm for scheduling jobs, and co-supervising student assistants.

Institute for Simulation and Training:

UCF's Institute for Simulation and Training is researching and developing technologies to lead innovation in MS&T tools, processes, knowledge, and systems to solve the world's toughest challenges and positively impact society. The Advanced Research Computing Center provides computational research clusters for UCF users (faculty and students) supporting research across disciplines.

The Opportunity:

The Software Developer I will help operate high computing clusters including managing user accounts, installing software, developing software, performing user orientations, and maintaining system scheduling software. The clusters run Linux and use Slurm for scheduling jobs; this position will use both to support researchers across the university to develop and run research computing applications on the clusters. The position will also co-supervise student assistants.

Responsibilities:
  • Support creation of user accounts of high performance computing clusters.
  • Install of software (compiling and installing) in Linux-based computing clusters.
  • Maintain of job scheduling software (e.g. Slurm).
  • Provide technical support for users of computing clusters (orientations, addressing problems, etc.).
  • Design and maintain of storage and networking systems within computer clusters.
  • Co-supervise student assistants.
Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree; or High School Diploma (or equivalent) and 4 years of relevant work experience in lieu of degree; oran equivalent combination of education and experiencepursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219(6).

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Proven experience as a Software Developer, Software Engineer, or similar role, particularly within a simulation or research-focused environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of high-performance computing and research collaboration platforms.
  • Strong proficiency with Linux/Unix-based operating systems.
  • Expertise in C, C++, and Python, with experience in using Anaconda for development.
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain software for deployed applications.
  • Experience with job scheduling software like Slurm or similar, especially for technical or scientific applications.
  • Eagerness and ability to quickly learn new programming languages and technologies.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities, with a keen attention to detail.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
