Job summary

The University of Pittsburgh's Health Sciences IT (HSIT) Applications & Development team seeks a Software Developer to design, build, and maintain custom software for the health sciences ecosystem. Qualifications

Software Developer

Health Sciences IT (HSIT) supports the six schools of the health sciences by providing the applications, integrations, and technical services needed for the education, clinical, administrative, and research missions. The HSIT Applications & Development team designs, builds, and maintains custom software that departments and faculty rely on daily, working directly with customers to translate business needs into supported solutions.

Day-to-day work includes writing and debugging code in C#/.NET and React, building and testing APIs, integrating applications with relational databases through ORM tools, participating in code reviews, and moving work through a CI/CD pipeline using Git. The developer is expected to work independently once requirements are defined, to document work thoroughly, and to recognize when to raise questions to more senior developers. Regular meetings with departmental customers are part of the role.

A key ambition for the team is to deepen its expertise in artificial intelligence and machine learning, positioning the group to bring AI/ML capabilities into its applications where they can meaningfully enhance how users work. The developer participates fully in the Scrum process (sprint planning, estimation, stand-ups, reviews, and retrospectives), collaborates with QA to ensure strong test coverage, and partners with the infrastructure team on deployment and access needs.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Five years of professional software development experience.
• Experience with C#/.NET and React.
• Hands-on experience building or integrating with cloud environments - Microsoft Azure preferred; comparable experience with AWS or Google Cloud Platform will be considered.
• Proficiency in UML modeling (class, sequence, use case, and activity diagrams) and relational databases/SQL, including complex queries, data modeling, and performance optimization.

Job Summary

Contributes to the design, development, coding, testing, debugging, implementation, and maintenance of moderately to more complex websites and/or software. Documents development and maintenance efforts, assists in integrating assigned work with other system components, and designs and performs functional testing.

Essential Functions

Design, develop, test, and maintain web applications in C#/.NET and React that support the missions of the health sciences.

Develop within an MVC or similar framework, following established team standards and patterns.

Apply microservice concepts where appropriate, determining when a microservice is the right solution for a given requirement.

Use AI tools such as Claude or GitHub Copilot to write, review, and debug code.

Create, test, and document APIs that expose data to customers and to standard internal tools.

Build and maintain integrations with relational databases using ORM tools, applying sound relational database concepts.

Work with data managers and database administrators to ensure application data structures meet reporting and integration needs.

Debug and troubleshoot application defects with close attention to detail, documenting root cause and resolution.

Produce and maintain technical and end-user documentation for applications, APIs, and integrations.

Move work through the CI/CD pipeline using Git, including branching, pull requests, and code review.

Support QA analysts through unit testing and defect resolution prior to release.

Perform other duties as assigned in support of Health Sciences IT and the six schools of the health sciences.

Physical Effort

Work is primarily sedentary and performed at a computer workstation, involving extended periods of sitting, typing, and viewing a monitor. The role requires occasional movement across campus to attend meetings. The incumbent may occasionally lift or move light equipment such as a laptop, monitor, or peripherals (generally up to approximately 20 pounds).
