General Job Description
The Social Worker will help to improve the school performance of students identified as having social, emotional, and behavioral health needs through individual and group counseling/therapy. As needed, the Social Worker will help staff with needs assessment, intervention planning, and implementation of support for students. The school social worker is to provide social services and assistance to improve the social and psychological functioning of children and their families to maximize the family well-being and the academic functioning of students in the virtual setting.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in the early recognition and prevention of educational problems
- Assist students in making positive educational choices and in overcoming problems which impede learning
- Help students address emotional, behavioral, and social issues that interfere with their adjustment to school and their capacity to benefit from their educational experiences.
- Participate as a team member in comprehensive evaluation, review, and re-evaluation processes
- Participate in the development of the student’s Individual Education Plan, including developing an appropriate Social Work goal and documenting progress
- To provide direct services to students, as specified on the student’s IEP, including one-to-one education, group work, consultation with staff, parent and social services liaison, and referral to community agencies
- Assist teachers in the development and implementation of appropriate classroom behavior support strategies and social skills instruction
- Facilitate communication and connection between home and school
- Identify and develop Behavioral Health priorities
- Demonstrate knowledge of function-based intervention planning for developing behavior change strategies that focuses on reducing problem behavior and increasing more appropriate behavior.
- Demonstrate knowledge of techniques needed to successfully complete effective Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA), function-based interventions, and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP)
- Maintain up-to-date student records
- Order and maintain an adequate inventory of materials and supplies
- Consult with teachers, parents, and school staff to develop targeted interventions for students with disabilities when the school teams need to explore alternative strategies
- Maintain appropriate confidential records and provide timely reports
- Meet and confer with parents and guardians to discuss their children’s progress, determine priorities for their children based on their needs
- Provide guidance in using community resources
- Provide teletherapy services for special education services
- Work productively as part of a team
- Other duties as assigned
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:Minimum of Master’s Degree in Social Work from accredited college or university with current New Mexico Public Education Department Certificate and License.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:Must have or be eligible for New Mexico PED and Board (LISW) Social Worker license.
NM Public Education Department School Social Worker License,
Social work license issued by the NM Social Work Examiners Board
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Remote in your home office. Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. After hours work may be required.
