Overview

The Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) is a leading school system in Maryland and the nation. This posting describes a Secondary Social Studies Teacher role and related expectations.

Responsibilities

• Plan and implement instructional programs aligned to system-wide goals and the HCPSS curriculum to meet student needs.
• Prepare and document lesson plans for assigned classes to achieve instructional objectives.
• Create an environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of students.
• Guide the learning process toward curriculum goals and establish learning objectives aligned with student needs and the HCPSS framework.
• Create a classroom environment that supports student engagement and academic success.
• Provide an instructional program to meet the needs of all students, including students with disabilities; refer students for appropriate specialized support as needed.
• Plan and utilize instructional methods, resources and evaluation techniques to achieve learning objectives.
• Provide input on student IEPs when necessary.
• Maintain safety for students, equipment, materials and facilities; implement school policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
• Establish classroom rules and procedures and maintain fair and orderly classroom management.
• Communicate standards, achievements and areas for improvement to students and families; provide timely feedback.
• Be available to students and families for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required.
• Plan and oversee assignments for paraeducators, student assistants, and/or classroom volunteers; provide input on performance as requested.
• Establish professional relationships with administrators, colleagues, students, families and the school community.
• Evaluate personal effectiveness and pursue professional growth to increase effectiveness.
• Participate in the safe and orderly operation of schools; attend staff meetings and professional development as required.

Minimum Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in an applicable field of education.
• Certification/Licensure: Meets the Maryland State Department of Education licensure requirements for Secondary Social Studies.

Preferred Qualifications

• Three years of teaching experience.
• Holds a current Maryland State Department of Education license in Secondary Social Studies.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of the HCPSS curriculum for the grade/content range of the position.
• Provide differentiated instructional techniques and a nurturing classroom environment.
• Effective classroom behavior management strategies and ability to modify curriculum for special-needs students.
• Skilled in preparing and implementing lesson plans and in communicating with students, families, administrators and stakeholders.
• Knowledge of and skill with web-based tools (e.g., Google applications) and integrating technology into instruction.
• Ability to collaborate with administrators, colleagues, and community members; maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.

Selection Criteria

Employment Information

• Compensation: 10-month position in the Howard County Educators Association (HCEA) unit. Salary placement per the 10-month teacher salary scale and HCEA Master Agreement.
• Exemption: Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, this position is exempt from overtime.
• Retirement: Mandatory MSRA pension participation for eligible employees with a 7% annual contribution.
